Why we need strong opposition.

I just feel that without a strong opposition, PAP can just do what they deem fit without much obstructions or challenge.
While I say so far they have not done anything detrimental to Singapore overall, but they have done things that is quite unpopular. Let me state some.
1. Casino Issue.
In the long run, the casino is for the better of Singapore to prevent a stagnantion in the economy. However, the approach in which they tried to sell the idea to Singapore was less than "democratic"
Public consultation were limited to certain audience beacuse they claim only ppl who understand the dynamics understand the entire issue.
When Public consulation was opened to bigger audience, people who are against the idea are readily shot down.
It just seems that public consulation is for the sake of it and the entire Casino decision has be pre-determined.
2. Melvin Tan issue.
When Melvin Tan's case become a big uproar in Singapore. Mindef were quick to amend the laws unopposed.
People like Melvin Tan are relatively fewer in numbers, there are many others who "fled" the country. There are even more who migrated after NS.
As a result of Melvin Tan's issue, Melvin Tan only have a financial setback but current Singapoeans suffer.
13 year olds are now more restricted in travelling. Further studies before NS is not allowed now. Suddenly more people suffer because of one guy.
Why, in the first place Mindef allowed the entire Melvin Tan issue to happen?
3. GST.
It increased unopposed.
4. Transport.
Ditto. Just 2 weeks after election, the entire hike issue is back again. Now PTC say it might increase. And what did they say before election? They say, now is not time for review.
They claimed it is unrelated to election and PTC is independant commission.
But let me ask this. is the ruling party capable and able to overrule PTC's decisions? -

agree. but the impt point is having good opposition rather having sake of having.
WP has good members in aljunied but lost. CCK has steve chia but lost too.
this means singapore are prepare to pay and impt pay the price for what PAP claim is a strong mandate dispite dropping 8% in votes.
WP has stated what you have mention, but ppl choose to ignore them. in our society majority wins. so what else can we do now but Pay and Pay.
hopefully we can stop paying 5-6 years later. -

Melvin Tan? I still think the government had done a big waste to the talents. People like Melvin tan don't come everyday. How many can acheive his status and talent? If you can I think the country should also support your cause. Maybe make community service as your NS or something...

4) Hmmm.... I am neutral over this... I think the raise of transport is much due to the private sector and other issue. The government can stop abit but how much? We got a very good transport system as compared to the USA where the bus services are making losses though cheap. -

Serious issues brought up by ppl are shot down with vague reason.
2) Melvin Tan. I was trying to say... BECAUSE of melvin tan... NS Laws have changed so unopposed. And as a result...13 year olds are moer restricted.
There wasn't opposition to voice out why laws here can change so easily.
3) Other countries have increases of GST with a basis. They have long history of budget deficit and usually GST increases are last resort.
Singapore, raised it to prevent a deficit. Plus, when GST was first introduced, it said that overall income for GST will decrease because tax structure has been changed that in the end, only people who buy alot of stuff is affected.
But turn out, GST gave govt moer income that the expected overall decrease.
4) We got a good transport system because we need to. American cities have transport system NOT for profit but as a SERVICE to its residents. Transport systems there aer usually borne by the city.
Here, we only care that transport companies don't suffer losses at expense of ppl's pockets. -

Singaporeans simply don't deserve a strong opposition because they have no views of their own, they are kiasu and kiasi, plus the entire environment worships money.
