Sex is covered endlessly. Rape and incest cases are described in unnecessary minutiae, as are instances of alleged sexual deviance ("Oh, isn't it dreadful?" is the line usually taken before the incident is recounted in slavish detail.) In essence, Singaporeans are fed a regular diet of soft porn, perhaps as compensation for precious little political debate. That's not democracy. It's smutocracy.(what are they talking about?)

It's the nasty truth that you cannot face up to.
Our elections were a goddamn farce, degenerated into mud-slinging by the PAP.I've never felt more ashamed by the puerileness of the whole episode, and I am ashamed to be from the same nation as them.
And their comment that we have a sensational lurid press is at least 60% true, just take a look at our tabloids.
Distraction? Definitely.

anyway what i can say is their pride problem..........seeing people stronger.......i once met someone on the yahoo chats............and the verbal fight was ensued......one guy from USA and someone from perth were fighting .....comparing countries.........education institutes position on international grounds.......swearing and cursing.........mockery and insults.......anyway.......
and say.....if you read NUS website on the international universities .........boy oh boy....i was glad singapore NUS made it to the TOP 20 postition........look at the counterparts........UK USA.....and where in the world is AU???????top 150 position?????
i did know something about australian culture.......and they don;'t like their opponents to be too clever or hardworking.......they prefer their opponents to best be STUPID .......LAZY........so that they can be seen as more hardworking.......useful in other people's eyes........they don't like to be shamed......they have so much EGO......that it is almost IMPOSSIBLE to say a word SORRY even if they have made a small error

Australian National university is ranked higher than NUS - it used to be a research facility in the past before they turn it into a university. Sydney university and Melbourne university have produced nobel science winners, so did University of Western Australia recently. I work in Australia. The Australians whom I work with are brilliant people. Don't condemn a whole nation just because of one newspaper. That would be pure stupidity.
Media sensationalism is rife here and that is the price you pay for the freedom of speech . The australian and american are arguing because they are probably proud of their nation and showing pride in a wrong way. However I don't see much of Singaporeans in Australia saying much about Singapore and even if they do - they reflect a more negative view of it . -

Well, one thing that stands out is that you're not too big in the hat size, at least not big enough to see the glaringly obvious. If your mate's paying someone to do his assignments, it leaves two options open:
1) If the person writing the assignment is competent, then theere's someone who's clever enough to turn his talents into money, and that someone is decidedly not your friend
2) If the person writing the assignment is incompetent, that makes him even cleverer to sucker your friend, and that also makes your friend doubly idiotic for coughing up for a lemon

Back to the main topic. There's a lot of things I love about living in Oz, but the Age isn't one of them. Their reporters don't check their facts and have an awful writing style, certainly not up to the standards of Reuters or AFP. One of their biggest culprits is Mark Baker, who's their Asian section editor the last time I bothered to check - no self-respecting newspaper would have hired that clod as a cub reporter.
The Age counts more as light reading than as a serious newspaper, and if you wanted to read a newspaper, The Australian's a much more palatable publication (although it too does come up short here and there). -

Let's face it, one always has the question the agenda when reading anything from the media. Some newspapers are controlled by governments, while others are controlled by megalomaniacal businessmen who think they can dictate how the world runs.
With what you read in the papers, keep the five percent that's made up of facts and use the rest in your garden - I've heard it makes flowers and tomatoes grow nicely. -

different people react differently to such circumstances (racism, discrimination, crime, whatever) ... but then again, this sort of things exist everywhere in the world to a certain degree, even in Singapore ... yes, there's racism where I am too, though not many people hear about it ... for those chap who've read about my rantings about my redneck lunatic neighbour, yes, that running feud is still on-going ... but I prefer to think that such incidents makes me stronger ... you'd have to learn to filter out such things after a while ... else it gets to you and daily life there becomes an ordeal ... and it makes you re-evaluate your own prejudices too doesn't it ? ... like how it must feel like to be a minority in Singapore, eh ? ....

Not all good lecturers exist in good universities, there are crappy ones even in the best universities. Ultimately they are not the one who look for the job with the qualification they have - you are and who you make yourself to be is your own choice. Remember you are judged on your behaviour and what you say at the end - not your university. -

Oh by the way , shall I tell you some of the members of parliament in Singapore actually did study in Australia? The late Ong Teng Cheong studied at University of Adelaide, some old pap members used to go on colombo scholarships to Australia to study too - I just cannot remember who. -
