I respect MM Lee for all that he has done for Singapore. I do not agree with some of the things he has done or may have been part of, and some of his ideals, but I believe that generally, he has done what he believed is best for Singapore. For that, he has my respect. I don't think the fact that he hasn't retired is entirely due to his being unable to let go of power. He thinks he can still contribute to Singapore (not just PAP), and I think he may be right in that.
No matter how much i resent the PAP because of some of their policies, the truth is that Singapore has not done too badly under PAP leadership, and I still want them to be at the helm. But like so many forumites here, i think greater transparency, accountability and morality is needed in the governance of our nation. And MM Lee, I think, may be standing in the way of that happening. -

But let us face it,everyone need to know his/her ability n know when he/she need to step down n let those young ppl takeover their place.Look at Communist China,and even Communist Vietnam,those old leader when they handover their position to the successor,they also totally retired from their position n their leadership position.Needless to say,democracy countries already practice this long time ago.
But look at Lou Lee,he still occupy an important seat in the parliament.Getting an income that is higher than that of a U.S president.Dont u think it is too much!!!!I think a brave man not only know how to go forward,but also know when to step backward.They also know when to be firm,and when to apologize when making mistakes.Know when to step up,and when to step down.And unfortunately,Lou Lee is not this kind of brave man. -

i think he should retired not because we dont respect him but to let LSH have his own style of leadership. with LKY, it hinder LSH in rolling some changes in issues such as as transparency, restructure of economy, political freedom and respect.

Why should LKY resign? If you were him you wouldn't resign too, because:
1) he draws a S$1,000,000+ annual salary
2) and on top of that, he draws a monthly pension (value unknown, details in my blog )

He has not been as effective after 1970s relying too much on certain conceptual assumptions about leadership and talents.
He was too individualistic and has failed to create a sustainable system of collective leadership based on pro-people and pro-teamwork accountability to tap on mass creative and entrepreneurship governance.
His tax-and-corporatisation policy was practised to the hilt to charge the highest fees and recover every cost which resulted in accumulation of taxes into surpluses which look good to government but fail to help the people in creating jobs or relieving them in lowering the rising costs of living.
Surpluses are claimed as success but such narrow plicy has resulted in setting back our economic vibrancy with monies locked up to pay for higher ministers' and civil servants' salaries and bonuses.
This kind of governance is not true leadership or successful government as it is not serving the people or pro-progress or creative governance.
His legalistic system of passing all kinds of laws and regulations to exert greater controls and regulations against dissent or participation only merely allows him to hold on to power.
Such legalistic governance system only benefit the ruling party. The whole system is created to benefit the governing controls and deprive the masses of level playing field to encourage mass participation in knowledge application.
The economy has been drifting sideway since the 1970s with foreign-investments being the major policy without concern for empowering the masses, accountability and transparency in whatever he is deciding and doing to the people.
He should have been more open and accountable and encourage his successor to open up to bring about creative governance with participation of the country's own talents.
Without such objective and empowering restructuring of the country there could be only limited success. His leadership centred governance could only go so far and no more and the people or economy could not hope to upgrade further until all are motivated by new policies and changes. -
You gots some valid points there, your concern is more toward the future of the country.
My comments is more directed to his past and the present well being of the state by his achievement in relative to neighbouring and small size young countries.

i'm only wating for the day when old man lee pass away, to see wherther if young man lee has any power. To be honest, young man lee power came from old man lee, thats what i believe. Singapore is more like a LEE DYNASTY.

But one thing perturb me is.....he seemed to be accumulating his wealth with ridiculous sky high salary, dividends,perks, chairmen fees and etc without ending.
I think is time for him to contribute his wealth to aid the poors or needy...like many successful businessmen and businesswomen of the world contributed in their personal capacity. Not just LEE Foundation making glory in its name.
