Well , there is always non transparency issues with the government . I always noticed that the news media in Singapore portray it in such great and good light while in another country , the news media hammer away at their governments and their governments have to give an answer.Originally posted by PRP:Fudgester,

U think election can ensure good governance.Since PAP kept getting elected, so it must be governed very well. Right?
So Fudgester didn't answer straight to my question. So he skirted answering my question and asked me question instead.Fud, if the answer to my question is "No", can u just honestly answer "No"?Then u can still make elaboration.Originally posted by PRP:Fudgester,

I think even PAP leader dare not to say to place party interest above nation interest. What is party interest? It is for selfish interest.Originally posted by TooFree:It will has to be a utopia world if leaders placed nation interest before party interest because in reality, this concept/model is not going to work. Say if 84 MPs individually represent no party, then there will be a trouble of having 84 diversive views in a parliament. Hence the essence of the party interest come in, to ensure competition and all ideas are centre around the party core vision.
Good governance, integrity and accountability are in a nutshell important aspect brought around by the 'election' effect or the essence of a democratic system and in no way, should it be removed. However, I am against using opposition as solely a rule of the thumb to form the 'check' party, not unless opposition is a credential one with reputable members.![]()

The govt make some unfair policies and the the way they treat the opp. leaders show that it doesn't treat democracy positively.By right, the govt can use democracy to rally and educate the ppl to support it.But it doesn't do so.So it might as well not to have election legally rather than using some inproper ways to win elections. Even with free speech, free press & free judiciary,it can't ensure good governance. We can take western countries as examples.Originally posted by casino_king:Good is Bad for some... Democracy is more than just "elections."
It is free speech, free press and free judicairy among others. All these freedoms ensure Good Governance. Without all these freedoms, all governance is suspect and can never be good.
"IF" we do get free press and judiciaryOriginally posted by PRP:Even with free speech, free press & free judiciary,it can't ensure good governance. We can take western countries as examples.
I believe we would like to have all these free press & etc because we don't have them. But good governance requires more than all these.

Yes, good governance is important, and in many aspects, PAP has done many good things for the past few decades.
But, a good govt should also ensure that there are capable people to succeed it, when necessary. I'm not talking about PAP selecting new/younger MPs and ministers. I'm saying that part of the job of a responsible govt is to cultivate a strong and viable opposition/s so that one day, they may take over power and rule effectively if needed.
For example, the Dutch govt recently had to resign as it was hit by a scandal involving one of its MPs. But the transition there is relatively smooth as there are viable opposition parties to take over.
If the crap hits the fan in the S'pore govt and it has to step down, what are the options for S'poreans to choose a new ruling party from? Do we maintain support for a hypothetically-disgraced PAP, or go with an untested opposition?? Devil-&-deep-blue-sea situation...
Yes, I support independent press & judiciary.Originally posted by kopikid:"IF" we do get free press and judiciary
it would be a 1st step towards Democracy
