Can you blame them? The last time I told a person not to smoke in a no smoking area, he turned violent and abusive. Everyone else told me to mind my own business.Originally posted by BillyBong:The politically correct phrase is: subdued initiative.
The problem is people here are just too afraid of 'consequences' should they act on their conscience. That explains why we need 'enforcers' to fine errant smokers instead of citizens telling them off on their own.
'It's not my problem'....they say.
Apathy is truly an issue in our country. And the govt has played a supressive role in the 'brown incident'.
With the govt's direction, our pursuit of money as the sole aim in life and their pursuit of continued means to siphon it, we have degraded into a mercenary society. We sacrifice ethics for richness, kindness for effrontery; we disregard rules and step on toes with impunity.Originally posted by SilverPal:Can you blame them? Its nothing to do with politics, but rather survival. Those who stand out like sore thumbs are first to get chopped when the axe swings.
It doesn't matter whether he is capable of such 'stupidity' or not.Originally posted by the Bear:actually, i don't think the viv dude is capable of such stupidity..
besides, most if not all of these things that engage politically sensitive things come FROM THE PMO...

Fact is he came forward and spoke on the matter. Those were his words. For him, the time is past whether or not you play the govt stooge.
The fact that he was a more 'radical' student activist in his schooling days no longer has any bearing over his attitudes today.
If he said as he was quoted in the press, then he is just as culpable.
This shows that the whole package must be ditched, for the sake of national growth.Originally posted by SilverPal:Why are people surprised about this? Its just a matter of time before Colin Goh offends our royal leeders enough and gets his turn.
Over the years, our leeders have established that singapore is not a place for personal opinions and alternative view.
Sure, you can whine about better ways of dressing, or doing your nails, but when you start to step on our leeders' toes, the question is not if they will suppress you, but when.
When the state controls the media and the judiciary, there is no longer a fear of backlash or negative opinion.
And who will the the first matyr for an ungrateful nation led by an even more ungrateful leeder? Who will sarcrific their, not pursuit of money but fight for survival in the face of such overwhelming opposition?Originally posted by LazerLordz:This shows that the whole package must be ditched, for the sake of national growth.
We will not move on with such blinkers.
Think about it, if you really want to serve the nation, your pain threshold is higher and you are more able to withstand blows and expect blows.
Perhaps one day, people will understand why CSJ has to do the things he does, be it foolhardy or not.
Politics is not the only field where we can improve this nation. It can come from many other fields, e.g academia or theatre too.Originally posted by SilverPal:And who will the the first matyr for an ungrateful nation led by an even more ungrateful leeder? Once upona time I was very idealistic. I wanted to better MY country. After getting slapped in the face many times, called anti-establishment, I decided that, if this is not what I want, the door is always open, no one is stopping me from migrating.
I do applaud people like robertteh, atobe, chiam, slyvia for actually standing up for what they believe in, but until I can leave the clutches of those who decide my fate, I can ill afford the same fate as mr brown and csj.
