Being happy seems to be easy yet difficult. It depends on how you define happiness. Some people thinks happiness means having all the money they want, posh car, dining at a posh restaurant etc.. but to some people, just a roof over the head, decent 3 meals and enough to spend is enough.
However, living in sg is stressful bcos of the competition and also the fast paced society. Somehow, I feel that there's a lack of humanity too.
Nevertheless, our gov should and must find ways to provide a roof,meals and transportation.electricity and water expenses reasonably and not assume average sporeans earned as much as gov believed in.
Pls take note that only Happy Singaporeans will make Spore great!!!It is no point to be proud of Singapore in where the people are unhappy. -

In singapore, elderly have many job opportunities :
1. As a cleaner in kopitiam or food court.
2. Self employment as a taxi driver.
3. As a dish washer.
We should be thankful that in Singapore even old folks can find jobs.
The government of Singapore is always helping its people - recently to help the poor buy flats. It looks like Singaporeans are relatively problem free and happy - not much suffering in Singapore. The people I met in America are generally unhappy with their lives and is always talking about trying to change it. But in singapore, PAP are in power for 40years and still going strong because of strong mandate by the people.
With such brilliant and capable government in singapore, I can't believe singaporean are unhappy. The result of the survey were flawed. Surveys which are broadcast widely on national papers to such a wide audience should meet higher standards.
I have done my own survey!!!
The true facts are:
1) One cannot have chewing gums
2) One cannot smoke in hawker centres or coffee shops
3) Children got to sturdy like crazy
4) No landmark in singapore for singaporeans to digest their time when is
unemployed.
5) Not able to withdraw cpf in full to go thailand or batam
6) Owning a car getting too expensive
7) Singaporeans women looking for rich men son to marry instead of poor singaporeans' son
Worrying not enough money to gamble in future casinos
9) Only the pap supporters get richer and richer
10) Internet too expensive. Paying first world subscription fees and getting third world connection. -

I also agree that Happy singaporeans will make Spore great. If we are not happy, it will reflect on Singapore's image. WE HAVE the best airport in the world. Our per capita GDP is one of the highest in Asia.
We rank among the global elite for the quality of our workforce and transparency of our financial markets.
We have first class educational institutions and our students routinely rank among the smartest in the world.
We have a government that is respected internationally for integrity and effectiveness. We pride ourselves on our clean environment and label ourselves a garden city.
Our city is so safe, anyone can walk down a dark alley in the middle of the night without missing a beat.
If we are doing so well on all fronts, why do we have the dubious honour of ranking among the most miserable people in the world ('Singaporeans the least happy people in Asia'; ST, July 13)?
It is no coincidence that the wealthiest nations are among the least happy in the world.
The pursuit of material wealth is often an end in itself. In the pursuit of happiness, the means is as important as the end.
One reason that propels a nation forward economically is dissatisfaction with the status quo and motivation to progress.
We would not have developed from a resourceless, war-torn country to our present state had we not embodied these principles.
But we internalise these principles so well, we personify them in every facet of our lives.
If I live in an HDB flat, I am not happy and want to move to a condominium. If I drive a Toyota, I want a Mercedes. If my child scores 80 marks in an exam, I want him to score 100. I am perpetually dissatisfied so I am perpetually unhappy.
We need to draw a distinction between negative and positive motivation. Negative motivation means I am not doing well and I cannot be happy until I do better.
Positive motivation means I have made progress and I am happy to know I can do even better.
Time pressure also impacts our well-being. Not only must we move ahead, but we must do so in little time. That, too, can be traced back to our transformation from Third World to First in barely 40 years. We are used to getting results in a short time.
It is clearly impossible to step on the brakes in the present global environment. In fact, we need to step on the accelerator just to keep pace.
Nevertheless, if we run through the list of places that rank ahead of us, we see China, Hong Kong, Japan, South Korea and Taiwan. They do not lag behind us in economic growth. Some are on par with us or ahead of us in their development. The profile of their population is not radically different either.
There is probably a common set of reasons for the general unhappiness of Singaporeans. That will take in-depth research to uncover.
There is another set of reasons that is individualised and will take honest self-reflection to reveal.
Whatever the reasons, the sure-fire way to continue languishing in the 'relegation zone' of similar surveys is to dismiss the conclusions as beyond our control. This is where we need to be dissatisfied with the status quo and be motivated to progress.

I note most young families are burdened with money making, and kids are left to their live-in maid.
It seems everything else takes the backseat, while money chasing, paper qualifications, and status are all prime priorities.
So hence, it wouldn't be a surprise that when they finally have to stop and smell the roses either by choice or circumstances, they find they've lost their ability to 'smell'... anything. -

So you're saying its the government's, and the teachers' responsibility to raise your children for you. Because you say you have no time.
If this is representative of the attitude of most parents in Singapore then I think we're doomed.

So that's why there are fewer babies in Singapore - people are wising up, living within their means so that they don't wind up out of time, and neglecting a child.
So it only goes to indicate that there will be more old folks with no children to look after them in future. Which is what the gov is afraid of - BURDEN! -

Parents should know more than to give birth mindlessly. Children are an expensive commodity in spore.
Still, less children does not equate to more money and more happiness -

Spore is a society which allows little room for those who cant make the mark set by the govt. As a result, parents, who have no control over this, have to follow suit. They too, place heavy emphasis on academic performance.
I guess a vibrant economy is far more important than a people of refined character and EQ. -

I hve 3 childrens, one is a medical doctor son and the other is a A* scholar son,my last is a grl in Sec 1. My dad and mom are working for their daily needs now.
Our household expenses is S$10 K p.m but our salaries earned atogether is less than S$10k taking into a/c of CPF contributions.
We hve to work more than 12 hours a day and c each others after 11pm daily including my eldest son working in NUH.
I am not complaining but worrying of my next generation especially my daughter who is not doing well in her studies.
My parents are working,why???for they want to be seemed as useful ppls but we are worrying about them because they are old oreli and no othe income and dont want to burden us.
U are right to state that if u can't afford, dont hve children loh???
Is this what our gov want??? pls wake up yr ideal!!!
