PUTRAJAYA: The number of drug addicts in the country continues to increase, with 4,814 new users and 6,103 relapse cases reported between January and May.
This brings to 295,989 the total number registered by the authorities as of May.
Some 10,470 new addicts were reported in the same period last year, indicating a 4.5 per cent increase this year.
Deputy Internal Security Minister Datuk Fu Ah Kiow said yesterday that Penang, Kedah, Perak and Kelantan had the highest number of addicts, most of them aged between 16 and 44.
Fu said a study by the National Drugs Agency revealed that 61 per cent became addicted due to the influence of peer groups, while 24 per cent got hooked out of curiosity.
"This shows the importance of the role of parents in keeping tabs on their childrenÂ’s activities. Parents must know who their friends are, where they go, which discotheques they patronise. There is nothing like taking care of your children yourself," he said.
Among the addicts caught last year were 185 civil servants, mainly from the lower ranks.
"Although the number is small, the Government will take stern action against them, including having their services terminated. How can you discharge your duty as a responsible civil servant if you are hooked on drugs?
"If you are involved in the keeping of classified documents and you are an addict, you can threaten the nationÂ’s security. The Government will not keep quiet. Those involved will be dealt with strictly."

their population is much bigger than us. educating each and everyone of them is difficult.

I wonder how many of M'sia's drug addicts are actually S'poreans who go there for a weekend of partying and drugs?

Malaysia is too large a country to control drug abuse effectively.
Even if they have a gov like our PAP there, they'd still have that many number of drug abusers.
There's simply so much room to run and hide about! Not to mention corruption of their Police force..... -

Media reports said Tunku Rizal was under the influence of designer drug when he tried to slash his father repeatedly for no apparent reason. He stabbed his mother when the latter tried to protect her husband.
Son had a history of drug abuse
KUANTAN: Tunku Rizal Shahzan Tunku Ismail, 21, had a history of drug abuse since he was a teenager.Affectionately known as Tunku Zizal, he was nonetheless very close to his parents, particularly his mother Tengku Puteri Kamariah Sultan Abu Bakar.
Pahang princess slashed to death
While his twin brother and other siblings live in their own homes, Tunku Rizal stayed with his parents at the familyÂ’s bungalow in Kubang Buaya.
After completing his secondary education, he did not further his studies nor seek employment. Yesterday his father, Tunku Ismail Tunku Sulaiman, had called his younger brother Tengku Abdul Ilal to get the services of a bomoh to "cure" his son.
"I was startled by his request. He seemed upset but did not say why he needed the bomoh," said Tengku Abdul Ilal.
"I was about to call him about the bomoh but instead received a call about the stabbing."
It is learnt that he had gone missing for two days before returning home yesterday.
