Ya, there was debate why President Nathan was "elected" into presidency by declaring other candidates ineligible.
Because a particular "FAMILY" thinks that he will not really do his job but appear to be doing it.
The late President did his job too literally and ended up embarrassing the Executive branch of the government.
In the end, he was segregated after presidency.
If you all think I am talking nonsense, try to go back 1999 when the late President was interevied by Times magazine.
Nah, you aint.
To be frank, I was wary of Ong Teng Cheong at first. After all, coming from a PAP background, I thought he'd be nothing more than just another puppet for them.
I'm glad to say that he proved me wrong. Ong Teng Cheong at least had the balls to ask the government to do a proper accounting of its reserves. That guy earns my true respect for not wanting to simply sit back and watch at things from the sidelines.
And when he died, the ruling party won't allow him to have a state funeral. They won't even explain the rationale behind it, only saying that it was on a 'case to case' basis. Sounds like petty politics to me.
