Mah: Chiam should focus on residents
by Tan Hui Yee
National Development Minister Mah Bow Tan yesterday accused Mr Chiam See Tong of raising "petty, non-relevant issue " instead of getting down to work to serve his Potong Pasir residents.
he made the comments in response to an ongoing public dispute between Mr Chiam and his defeated People's Action Party opponent, Mr Sitoh Yih Pin, over a set of damaged solar lights in the opposition wards.
The lights were installed on government land leased to Mr Sitoh, who is the PAP's grassroot adviser in the ward. The lights were vandalised recently but Mr Sitoh said he had to return the land to the Government, while the opposition MP said the are a where the lights are does not come under the jurisidction of his town council.
Said Mr Mah yesterday: "At this point in time, it is important for the elcted respresentatives, whether it is PAP or the opposition, to get on with the job of serviing their residents.
"The PAP MPs have already started work to draw up plans to fulfil the promises they made during the election. I think the opposition MPs should do likewise and stop playing games. "
Mr Mah was speaking after attending a National Day observance ceremony in the Botanic Gardens.
Mr Sitoh declined to repair the lights as he said the land's lease will run out on Oct 31.
Mr Chiam told Shin Min Daily News earlier this week he wanted to find out the terms of the lease agreement for the land, which he believed may include certain conditions like maintaining the lights.
However, the HDB has declined to reveal the terms of the lease, saying it is private information between the board and Potong Pasir Citizens' Consultative Committee, which Mr Sitoh advises.
Yesterday, Mr Mah accused Mr Chiam of "trying to divert attention from the real issue " .
"The main issue is this is a problem in the constituency.... the Member of Parliament should try to solve the problem as quickly and as efficiently as possible, " he said.
Mr Chiam is now seeking to lease the land to build a covered walkway for residents.
Meanwhile, Minister in the Prime Minister's Office, Mr Lim Boon Heng, told reporters at a separate event yesterday: "In Potong Pasir, you cannot have your cake and eat it. You've decided on Chiam See Tong, so he should solve your problems. You have rejected Sitoh, so don't expect him therefore to continue serving you.
"For all he has done, you have rejected him and you wanted Chiam See Tong. You've got a problem, then you go to Chiam See Tong."
The piece of footpath with the solar powered lights were built on land that was leased to Mr Sitoh, the PAP representative for Potong Pasir.Originally posted by foomwee88:How much is the cost involved to do the repair ? less than 10k, I believed
Hopeless Chiam and PAP,both r to be blamed!!!
Nevertheless, the issue here is both parties members are never take servce of ppls in their heart, shame on chiam and sittoh!!!
Chiam is right!Originally posted by Atobe:The piece of footpath with the solar powered lights were built on land that was leased to Mr Sitoh, the PAP representative for Potong Pasir.
The PAP government has even interfered and prevented the amount of money that Chiam can spend on properties managed by his Town Council to upgrade lifts for his constituents.
Do you think Chiam will be allowed to spend his Town Council money on a piece of development that do not belong to his Town Council ?
Seriousy, do you believe that Chiam is to be blamed for the continued disrepair of the lighted footpath ?
Or should the PAP representative - Mr Sitoh - be taken to task for giving up on the maintenance works simply because he feel that the lease will run out by end-October 2006 (another 2 months to go), and also because he and his party boss feel that their work is not appreciated by the Potong Pasir Constituents ? (Note the last paragraph in the Straits Times report that was referred in the opening post - in which Mr Lim Boon Heng criticized the Potong Pasir residents for not appreciating the work done by Mr Sitoh, and taunt the residents to continue supporting Mr Chiam and see the results of his abilities. )
For the sake of PPC residents, they should repair the dam things and talking about responsibility at a later date.Originally posted by Atobe:
Finally, someone from the Ruling Party decide to throw some weight behind its neglected candidate at Potong Pasir.
Unfortunately, Mah Bow Tan was chosen, and had not so cleverly passed his dim witted remarks to an already unnecessary petty politics over the failed project of providing "a footpath with solar powered lighting" started by the failed candidate from the Ruling Party.
The decision - by the failed candidate from the Ruling Party - not to repair the failed solar lighted footpath was a petty political response to the smart moves from the residents of Potong Pasir.
With the tenure of land used by the footpath being awarded to the Ruling Party, and expiring in October 2006, and with its unknown prospect in winning the Potong Pasir Constituency, the Ruling Party candidate has declined to continue the maintenance and repair of the solar-powered street lights, which has become a political issue in Potong Pasir.
In the last development to the ongoing dispute, Chiam had outmanouvered his archrival from the Ruling Party by upping the ante with his application to the URA to build a sheltered and lighted footpath - as a replacement to the existing unsheltered footpath that featured the failed solar powered lighting built and funded by the 2-time losing candidate from the Ruling Party.
Unbelieveably, Mah Bow Tan has the audacity to tell Chiam to stop playing petty politics and serve the constituents.
This must be unique in Singapore's political history, where a Ruling Party starts a problem in an opposition ward - and will not resolve the problem that it has created, and will use that problem to show up the supposed incompetency of the oppositon MP in resolving issues.
Now that Chiam See Tong has applied to the URA to lease the same piece of land to build a covered and lighted footpath - an improvement to the uncovered footpath built by the Ruling Party - will the Minister of National Development Mr Mah Bow Tan approve such an application from Mr Chiam; or will Mr Mah expect Mr Chiam to spend on the repairs of a failed PAP footpath project - (which even its own candidate will not spend money on) - before approving the application to build the proposed New Covered and Lighted Footpath ?

Hey, don't see him no up.Originally posted by BillyBong:Mah Bow Tan may be congratulating himself for being part of the playground bullies: Lee Boon Yang, Sitoh etc.
What strikes me is his brain density ratio. He refuses to disclose information concerning the agreement over the land lease between HDB and Sitoh so as to clear up any misunderstanding betweem the arrangement, then goes on a presumptious campaign against Chiam that to disclose such info is to invite cannon fodder for Chiam to take pot shots at the Ruling Party.
Deja Vu anyone? During elections 2006, SDA applied to HDB for the flat building costs after Mah Bow Tan threw down the gauntlet to SDA to build 'cheaper' flats. Ironically, he then deliberately blocked their attempts by instructing HDB to withhold the information. He then proceeded to lambast them for being naive and not doing their research, using terms as 'insincere' and gaining 'political mileage'.
Is our Mah Bow Tan changing his goalposts once too often after the originals are beaten?
Not only is he making a goof of himself, he's taken over Yeo Cheow Tong as the No. 1 dimwit of the Ruling Party.
His current weight-lending to the Potong Pasir incident smacks of sour grapes and brings to light his past failed campaign against Chiam. At this point, he's probably taking any advantage available to discredit Chiam.
And our local media is an excellent platform, having 'superfluously' published his comments in BOTH the ST and TODAY papers.
mr MAH is certainly nt veri brightOriginally posted by Atobe:

Spotlight put up and linkway planned
I refer to the article, "Mah: Chiam should focus on residents" (ST, Aug 9).
Mr Mah Bow Tan as a minister of over 15 years, should know that I as the MP for Potong Pasir for 22 years, have been serving the residents there faithfully.
As regards the dispute concerning the solar lamps, I would like to inform the minister that my town council immediately installed alternative lighting once it learnt that six of the solar lamps were spoilt. The footpath between the MRT station and Block 147 is now brightly lit with a powerful spotlight.
Mr Mah may also like to know that whereas the PAP membersare only planning to carry out improvement works, we in Potong Pasir have already awarded contracts for repair-and-redecoration works for 31 blocks and work will commence soon.
A covered linkway will be built at the said footpath once permission is granted. Other projects are being planned.
The solar lamps were installed by Mr Sitoh Yih Pin and the Citizen's Consultative Committee along the footpath without the town council's knowledge. Now, Mr Mah and Mr Lim Boon Heng are of the opinion that I, as the elected Member of Parliament, should bear responsibility for the mistake made by Mr Sitoh and the CCC. If the PAP indeed holds this view, it does not augur well for the future of PAP politics.
Chiam See Tong
MP elect for Potong Pasir
The land do not belong to pap...it belongs to all singaporeans.Originally posted by NewAge:have anyone notice that the PAP still have around 40% vote in the area?! So how can the PAP say that the ppl chose Chiam, only less ppl chose the PAP. As the land belong to the PAP shld't the PAP do something about it? U cant go into your neighbour house to help him repair this lights. U got to ask permission first. Anyway who will willingly repair things for others?! If i am chiam i will surely scream and curse the ministry for not letting me reveal the land lease agreement. The land is part of my jurisdiction?! How can i serve the ppl better without knowing anything about it?! Dam it all this sound like office politics within politics.
most thinking politician cant think of anything without being sued or bankrupt liao leh...Originally posted by Manager433:The spot light fixed by Mr Chiam althought not very strong but at least serve some purposes. Simple ( cheap ) yet making full use of its function. Now wat we Singaporeans need are thinking politicians ( MP ).
