Are Singaporeans Ready To Defend Country?

Anyway, CPF regulations just make it harder but not impossible.
Fearful of their plight in the twilight years, I can empathy with Sporeans who feel no sense of concrete reassurance by the govenment for a safety net. -

I REFER to the letter, 'Are Singaporeans ready to defend country?' (ST, Aug 12), by Mr Lee Chuan Yaw.
I am 20 and a third sergeant serving national service in the field defence squadron in Paya Lebar Air Base.
I remember when I was training in the School of Infantry Specialists (Sispec), one of our platoon commanders, Warrant Officer Lam, told us this during a lecture: if every man protects his family, ultimately they would protect the whole nation.
While there may be a few instances of Singaporeans trying to evade national service, there are also many others who would be ready to pick up a rifle and head for the front line to protect their families.
In fact, at Sispec I met many warrant officers who loved the country so much that they would do just that.
There were commandos and guards, and I was greatly inspired by them because I have a family and a girlfriend and I want to protect them too.
I can safely say that Singaporeans can trust in our soldiers and these officers to lead our soldiers into battle.
I would like Mr Lee to know that I am willing to fight and die for Singapore if there is ever a need to.
I will always remember the last line of the Singapore Armed Forces pledge, which states: 'I will defend Singapore with my life.'

During my NS ... I met pple who are really patriotic and really serious about our defence .... but after a few years in the society.... the same pple has lose the zest .. to each of his own .... after giving 2.5 yrs to the country ... what do we get ... any reconginition??? ... $100 progressive share lor
For me ... I do not want to defend the country but have to if its we are suddenly being attack... because we will have no where to run ... unless there are ample time to react ...i am sure most of us will make a beeline to run out the country by hook by crook ... stay and defend SG.......NO WAY ! -
The only way to prove who is loyal to the country or not is when a crisis actually happens.
All this talk about dying for the country now is just that. Talk only.
I reckon those who are truly patriotic keep low profiles and don't see the need to go around proclaiming they will do this or that in times of crisis.
The saying "Empty vessels make the most noise" wasn't coined up out of thin air, you know. -
