Why focus on the economy? Because that's what wins elections I suppose. Anyway, he has made clear the focus of the economy in the next few years and where the jobs are/will be...
petrochemical industries (Singapore is already the world's largest exporter of off-shore oil rigs) particularly in the liquefied natural gas market
electronics (high tech wafer fabs are still being established in Singapore),
biomedical industry (pharmaceuticals, vaccine production and translational research)
tourism (integrated resorts in a few years' time)
Eventually, more manufacturing jobs will be lost to cheaper economies, even in high-value industries, as the Chinese and Indian workers become more skilled. We have to move into increasingly knowledge-based jobs like design, project management and consultancy in IT, high-tech engineering and biomedical sciences.
Surprised he did not mention financial services though...there is a desperate shortage of qualified accountants in China at the moment and I wonder why there aren't more local accountancy firms moving there. Perhaps Singaporean accountants are picky and not willing to re-locate? -
On the topic of talent, I think PM contradicted himself.
Saying Mr Brown, a local, is talented and instead of using his talent, went on air to bring him down further is bad handling of talents that dare to speak up on issues humorously.
Why crave for foreign talents at the expense of local talents?
Is it because foreign talents don't give the kind of problems that local talents do?

Foreign talents don't complain about our govt. Or maybe it practises favouritism.

To ask Singaporeans to be big-hearted for foreign talents to migrate here without serving NS really piss me off.
Can the government tell us the actual numbers/percentages of foreign talents who are living here and how many of their children really do NS?
To ask us to be big-hearted, one must show big-heartedness to Singaporeans first!
The way it's being put, now I feel really marginalised to second-class kind of citizenship. First-class immigrants don't need to serve NS - second-class local citizens must.

I am a chairman of a MC and received at least 10 complaints from the residents that these FTs espeically the Chinese Nationals,not only spitting and littering ans also creating a lot of nusiance in our cond.these at least 30 FTs including Prostitutes are staying in sub-divied rented compartment units.yet Our PM asked us to love them who are not only infringe our p life but bring bad influ 2 our children. We hve to sleep at 9 and wake up earlier to work the next am but these PTS are different , they walked with wood slippers when they returned to their units during hours of darkness. Can u imagnie how u wud feel like?
I am just wondering are these the FTs whom we can be entrusted with our future in Spore? They are engaging in low valued and /or immoral business to survive in spore and spend very little $ from what they had earned, can they help to elevate our economic???

The baby bonus is clearly not attractive enough.
The govt should relook the incentives & find ways to solve this problem rather than just importing FT.
U give free scholarship to FT, after they graduate they will leave for US or Australia. How many will take up S'pore citiizenship?
Admitting so many FT into our local schs & universities- end up our kids have to go overseas, after that, they don't want to come back.
The money used for free scholarships might as well spend on reducing childcare & medical cost & high cost of living. -
