Food for thought:
Is our overly strong government the cause of
a) our high-living standard
b) over reliant citizens
c) and less competitiveness ?!?

Our wages are too high relative to productivity. High-tech manufacturing and high value services are the solution but we need a more highly skilled workforce. That is why we still need foreign workers with the skills we lack.

Singapore is lucky to be placed third - behind Hong Kong and Taiwan; but whatever happened to Korea and Japan, which are supposed to be economic power houses of Asia too.
After forty-five years since independence, the main driver of Singapore's economy remain not in Private Enterprises but in the hands of the Government and its Government-linked Companies (GLCs).
Since the economic crisis of 1988, 1998, and 2002 - economic review committees have set out their reviews, and each time it recommended less Government involvement and competition in the local economy, and more nurturing of private small and medium enterprises.
Yet we continue to see the growth of Temasek Holdings and its various subsidiaries in the Singapore Economy.
What could be the reason for this persistence in not changing despite all the publicity given about changes to be made ?
Could it be due to the thick web of relationships and political loyalties in the assigning of posts in the various GLCs ?
This subject was discussed in this forum in 2004, under the heading :
How long more shall Singapore bear the cost or losses due to the traversities of a Single Party Rule ?
It will not be any surprise when Vietnam surge ahead of Singapore within the next ten years, when it learn and adapt itself to the Rules of the Game.
Vietnam had opened itself to the World only in 1994 - while Singapore has been at it since 1960s, and Vietnam is already in forth position after 12 years in the game, next to Singapore's third.
