As you said, it is not cheap having local workers. You choose to hire locals as a matter of principle, but you cannot employ many of them and do not contribute that much to the GDP.Originally posted by ShutterBug:But when I see and hear people down and out because they lost their livelihoods to FTs from PRC, I feel the pinch. And I can;t help them cause I can only afford so many local employees. It's not cheap having them, and having them cheaply by depressing their salary, I might as well hire FWs and don't bother helping anyone but myself.

Of course,I cant deny those scientists n reserchers I saw in NUS and MNC labs contribute 2 our GDP but they are minority.
But I m very sad to state that majority od these foreigners are flies looking 4 $ and not FT whom we attracted here now, cause of our S$.

Still, i feel less threatened by Subcontinental FTs than PRCs.Originally posted by oxford mushroom:Your responses smack of bigoted ranting and contribute nothing to your arguments.
The government is not encouraging PDMM or PRCs to work in tui-na parlours and if you have not even read the newspapers, go out and see what has happened to many of these massage joints today. Only Singaporeans and Malaysians are allowed to work in these trades now. Perhaps you are happier that only women from Singapore and Malaysia are allowed to sell their bodies?
The vast majority of PRCs working Singapore are NOT prostitutes and robbers. If they are, why should Singaporean workers fear for their rice bowls? You are not suggesting that Singaporeans are also 'prostitutes/robbers' as well?![]()

From where I stand, because I'm quite a keen observer and participants in the liberal arts, I find that many Singaporeans my age, are thinking of shunning those industries who have a disproportionate number of foreign workers, and in my circle at least, most of us are seeking a better pasture in performing arts, international relations, film studies/production or the academia.
At least for this group, our command of English is a bonus and akin to our only way out. Perhaps we just have to leverage on what we possess.
Shutterbug is right, talent is talent. Saturation is the biggest problem facing our economy right now, because the people behind the immigration policies, are slow to react to the fallout of liberal immigration and work permit policies. It took them 6 years to realise that we have to tighten certain aspects of it.
In every nation, migrants are expected to add value to the GDP and possess skills not found in their new homeland, or take up jobs that no one will do. This is undeniable. However, what becomes seriously flawed, which many do not see, is the duplication of services at middle-management level and this argument put forward by supporters of such a move, will lead to this economy becoming a wage-based economy, rather than output and value driven.
Are we going to sit by and idly accept wages as the primary determinant of our economy, and take so many steps backwards until the major part of our economy is stuck in manufacturing?
There is a growing trend in many countries in the OECD and G8, that are calling for restraints on immigration, because there needs to be a traffic light somewhere in this post-modern labour movement. You cannot have a free-for-all from the North to the South, not when the workers of the South do not have the kinds of debt burden that the North has. There has to be affirmative action elsewhere to balance out the "roughing of the edges" that occurs when large pools of cheap labour, unencumbered by the consumer trap that the citizens of the North face.
I do not think so.
But as for me, I thank God that I had an education which allowed me to be more global.

This is not a debate any longer...sounds more liike hooligans hurling abuse....and it's worse in the other thread.
Close the topic...Singaporeans do not deserve free speech...they cannot handle it.

it is not fully xenophobia; how else do you think singaporeans can voice their displeasure when the government doesn't care?
yes, you are pragmatic and you can analyze such an issure from the government's perspective, i respect you for that; it is a mark of leadership. but we all have to remember(if PAP does not remember), that the government is elected to serve the nation, not feed their own pockets.
the xenophobic remarks typed by some forumners like heroboy or foomwee88 may be extreme, but they do make some sense afterall. they are probably the best representatives of oppression by the incumbents in white.
i have been observing your posts and i must say you are knowledgeable, armed with an excellent command of english language. try to open your mind further and grasp some ground knowledge, it is beneficial.
just my humble opinion. no offence meant.
it will be a common sight in taiwan for parties to hurl abuses at one another. even their parliament does it too.Originally posted by play_n_play:everybody has the right to express his idea. but it is surprising to see sb. using the ugly words here and there in this forum.
it made me remember my trips in taiwan. The parties fight, argue with each other using the most ugly chinese words, but ironically, they did not feel shame.
it is not a real democracy, there must be sth. wrong in the education or society system.
