Rising population density needs to be looked at
I READ Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong's National Day Rally speech on welcoming foreigners to make Singapore their home and would like to point out that our population density is on the rise.
I agree with PM Lee that we should welcome foreign talents to work in Singapore, and overseas scholars to study here, because we need a significant talent pool in order to attract foreign investments so that Singapore can continue to stay competitive.
On the other hand, there are several issues that need to be resolved. These issues relate to our scarce resources - for example, land.
We can try to attract more people, but it is harder to expand our land. If we try to expand vertically, the sky's the limit.
It is difficult not to notice that new Housing Board flats, for example, those in Seng Kang, are getting smaller. A couple can hardly fit a bed and a wardrobe nicely into their bedroom.
It is also difficult not to notice that our modes of public transportation, such as MRT trains and buses, are getting more and more crowded. We are going to face a crisis in personal space!
Has the Government overlooked this issue?
We are already standing shoulder to shoulder in the MRT trains and it is not hard to imagine that we may have to step on one another's feet so that more commuters can be packed into each train carriage.
This raises a safety concern. Should the train driver need to jam on the brakes, you can imagine how many commuters would be injured.
Terrorists don't need to blow up the trains or the stations. All they have to do is toy with the braking systems.
As our living space becomes smaller, noise from neighbouring HDB units becomes more pronounced and is becoming more unbearable, for example, when there is renovation next door or a few doors away.
In new estates like Seng Kang and Punggol, you can hear renovation noise even when it is three blocks away.

I believe there are a lot of unsold flats all over the island which HDB is looking forward to selling and or lease.
It's all pretty much tied-in lah....

There was once at experiment made with mice - to observe behaviorial changes in two different settings - one in a loose and spacious setting, where a small group of mice is given enough space to grow, with another group of mice being jam-packed into a smaller space disproportionate to its numbers.
Without any surprise, in the jam-packed space - we had mice which displayed accentuated signs of aggressiveness, intolerance, chronic behaviour; while those other mice with sufficient space to grow were more playful, attentive, alert to changes, and more sociable to new mice entering its midst.
Over the last thirty years, HDB flats seems to be shrinking in floor area built on taller block of flats, and with each block being built closer to the neigboring block.
Senkang 21 has made this concept even more accentuated, with the most expensive blocks being even smaller than the previous designs termed as HDB Executive Flat, or even the 5-Room Maisonettes; and yet these Senkang 21 flats are sold at even higher prices.
Has the Ministry of National Development - and the Government - over paranoid in declaring a shortage of land, when its only purpose is to generate higher revenues through sale from the land banks, by releasing land parcels at high reserve prices to private developers ?
This has been done at the expense of the mental health to Singaporeans, and should we be surprise by the higher rate of suicides, mental breakdowns, spike in patients admitted to the Mental Institute, road rage and social and cultural intolerance towards others ?
How else can we prove this increase in social and mental health problems except by referring to the experiments with those mice ? -

Flats need to be smaller lah and prices higher lah.
Otherwise how will HDB compete with the transport companies in terms of profits? -

We'll just buy more sand from Malaysia and grow more land, or we'll just dig downwards to make more space. I won't be surprised if in a few decades most Singaporeans would be living deep underground like moles.

A simpler and more effective way (which isn't illegal) to cause mass mayhem is start a rumour on the escalator that XXX Department Store is offering free samples of YYY merchandise for a limited time only. Then stand back and enjoy watching the ensuing chaos. -

Actually, you'all are debating and arguing over a decoy issue; the real objective in FTs is enlarging their supporters - how else do you think they can stay in power every GE??
Without all these FTs over the decade, I don't think they could have gotten 66.6%. -

The speech you quoted does not address the problem cited by TS.
Have more water equals to having more land for people to live, have recreation lah?

These young people will become old one right? Then you will eventually face the same problem one mah. What the statement did, was merely delaying the small problem from being solved (which is easier) and let it become a bigger problem in the future.
P.S. Water will not make Spore more people, it will make more fungi.
