So are the protests against IMF actions justified in your view?Originally posted by the Bear:in a nutshell...
the IMF and World Bank will loan a whole crate of money to countries... and impose a bunch of things on the countries.. the money is usually used by corrupt dictators or whatever to build useless monuments or something..
the country is in a mess and saddled with HEAVY debt...
the backers of the IMF (guess who?) comes in and imposes a whole lot of conditions because of the debts... things which allow those who are connected to the backers to come into the country and stripmine the resources... causing even more misery to the country...
the IMF and World Bank has never been "helping the poor nations".. it has always been "stripmining the poor"
in even more dastardly things, according to someone who has left the service of these people, if the leader of a country refuses to cooperate with the IMF, there are convenient "plane crashes"...
if you really want to know you may start by reading this book entitled "Confessions of an Economic Hit Man"

Almost all organisations, even those with the noblest intentions, will become corrupt or lose their directions once they become too big and powerful.Originally posted by iveco:So are the protests against IMF actions justified in your view?
Someone should rake the dirt on IMF, a la UN's "oil for food" scandal in Iraq.![]()

Anyway, IMF and WB aren't against the protests. It is the Singapore gov that is against those protests.
We complain about KL impinging on our sovereignity when they patrol close to Batu Putih (Horsburgh Lighthouse), yet we put ordered Jakarta not to let anti-globalisation protestors congregate on Bintan during the IMF meeting.Originally posted by LazerLordz:it's one thing to ban protests here, it's just plain wrong to tell or insinuate other nations that they cannot allow protestors there.
Assuming that it is true, who the heck are we to tell them what to do. Typical SG mindset, full of hubris and arrogance.
There is absolutely no proof that Indonesia banned them at Singapore's bidding. Certainly Indonesia has denied any influence from Singapore. Why should they listen to this little red dot?Originally posted by LazerLordz:it's one thing to ban protests here, it's just plain wrong to tell or insinuate other nations that they cannot allow protestors there.

because where Singapore's foreign policy is concerned, I have seen many grey areas that are usually hard to perceive at first glance. Our national policy has never been one of open admission, but rather cryptic actions.
It is good most of the time, because we don't show our areas of weakness.
Still, regarding this, I would never rule it out, after all, we do have an economic stake in the stability of the Batam, Bintan, Riau growth triangle.![]()
