How does slashing the prices of fines offset rising fuel costs?Originally posted by ShutterBug:Fuel prices up, so traffic fines cut

MALAYSIAN police have slashed traffic fines by up to 70 per cent to help drivers who are struggling with the high cost of living as fuel prices soar.
Internal Security and Public Order Director Mustafa Abdullah said fines would be lowered from Monday in a move also aimed at encouraging Malaysians to pay up on traffic fines.
'However, traffic offenders who received their summonses earlier must pay according to the old rates to avoid legal complications,' he was quoted as saying by Bernama news agency.
Mustafa said the new rates would be maintained if Malaysians responded positively, and dismissed concerns that the decision would encourage motorists to break traffic rules.
The police official said that fines would not be reduced for serious offences such as fatal accidents, drink or dangerous driving and illegal racing.
Changes include a reduction in fines from RM70 ($30) to RM50 for not wearing seat belts, from RM70 to RM30 for motorcyclists without helmets, and from RM100 to RM70 for using a handphone while driving, Bernama said.
Last year, the Malaysian police introduced a 50 per cent discount on fines for a month in an effort to clear a backlog of unpaid summonses. -AFP.
It is after all their choice on what to slash in their effort to relieve their peoples' pockets.Originally posted by BillyBong:How does slashing the prices of fines offset rising fuel costs?
The Malaysian police seem to have confused everyone by undercutting the law to ease public burden.
A 70% reduction of fines will surely create mayhem among the errant driver population, since traffic violation no longer carry a severe enough penalty.
No! It means the rate for kopi money will rise to make up for the deficit.Originally posted by Fatum:does it mean that the going rate for kopi money for malaysian traffic police will go down too ? ......
I was refering to the context of Malaysian police relating rising fuel costs to traffic fines.Originally posted by ShutterBug:It is after all their choice on what to slash in their effort to relieve their peoples' pockets.
Our gov could choose better what to slash if they do follow suit (which I seriously doubt they will EVER).
50GBP (S$150) for parking fines if paid within 14 days, 100GBP (S$300) if you pay in 28 days. If you do not pay after that or lose your appeal, you pay 150GBP (S$450) and costs.Originally posted by HENG@:london authorities have long have schemes like these.

there are many ways to help motorists cut costs, this is definitely not one of them.
a fine is a fine.
it is ridiculous to give discount for an offence.
