$100s million 'Gardens by the Bay' today - dig up tomorrow ?

The brilliant Mah - Minister of National Development - had called for an International Design Competition for the proposed 'Gardens by the Bay' in January 2006, and now awarded to two different competing teams of designers.
Will this be another exercise in wasting Public Money ?
It had surely cost a few million dollars to prepare the Tender Documents to employ the prospective Consultant Designer; and perhaps another few million dollars will be spent on Consultation Design Fees; before spending the expected 'hundreds of millions' on the three gardens.
The 'Gardens by the Bay' is to be developed on Prime Land - in the heart of Singapore, and on reclaimed land which already cost millions of dollars to reclaim this land from the sea.
How long will these 'Gardens by the Bay' stay before being dug up for some other more ambitious projects to be developed in the future on these prime sites ?
The Final Costs will surely far exceed the hunreds of millions' already expected by Mah - who probably has not considered the annual maintenance costs to the 'Gardens by the Bay'.
Retrenched Singaporeans had better start getting Green Fingers before the completion of these Gardens by the Bay. -
Maybe unemployed Singaporeans can take a course in gardening and find employment taking care of this garden.
Voila, more jobs created.

Will it not be a subject of local pride, when a local garden design can match the best of any gardens in the World, instead of having 'foreigners' designing our own gardens ?
Holland has its famous Keukenhof Gardens famed for its abundantly colorful tulips in dramatically landscaped displays.
Each EU State has its own unique national flower gardens, with settings that are uniquely local.
Japan has its famed 'Cherry Blosson Gardens', and so has Australia and New Zealand.
As to be expected with landscape architects from 'temperate climates', we are to expect already exotic designs for the Singapore 'Gardens by the Bay based on the stretched imaginations of Caucasians of 'Life in the Equatorial Zone'.
It seems that in the Garden at Marina South - to match the unique towering altar-like IR design - the proposal is for " iconic 'Super Trees' structures, the Garden will wow visitors, especially the young and energetic, with its vibrancy and colourful blooms. " and with " the centrepiece will be two huge 'cooled conservatories', sitting on some 2.5 hectares of land on the waterfront ".
A Garden with 'iconic Super Trees' based on some engineering structures and with 'two huge cooled conservatories' ?
Has Singapore become so wealthy as to begin to splurge on such iconic horizontal projects with expenditures that rival the iconic vertical 'Petronas Towers' Kuala Lumpur and '101 Tower' of Taipei ?
With expected Hundreds of Millions to be spent - at each different stage of the projects - how long will these projects remain before being dug up, or its large expanse of land being nibbled away for other economically viable development in the future ? -

there were a couple of local firms shortlisted in the competition...
perhaps they couldnt measure up to the standards of the international firms which have more exposure and experiences in projects of this scale... -

Our great gov spent S$600 mil to build 2 LP at Marina Sqare and S$ 1 mil a yr to maintain them .the blgs hve all the waterproofing problems during construction stage but still put into operation with water leakage problems.
when the LPs have been opened, a heay downpour of rain causing a flood with water damaged items like carpet and sound system therein costing more than a few mil S$ loss.
The proposed gardens will also cost Spore a bomb which in my view are usesless and will be white elephants as the LPs. -
Kudos to the Singapore heads for coming up with this idea. I tink itz great - creates more excitement, greenery, creates jobs, boosts tourim, beautifies the country, earns more foreign exchange, complements the IRs.
Way to go! Whoa, I really salute the heads!

For lack of information on my part, I won't dispute their projections that 35,000 jobs will be created.
But the billion dollar question is: will 35,000 Singaporeans choose to work in a casino?
