Woohoo!! PTC approves 1.7% fare increase for bus and trains!

PTC approved it because if they don't approve it, they have to come up with a reason why. They don't wish to come up with the why as it wastes time and money, so just say yes. After all only 1.7% what, no big deal.

Fare increase of an insignificant 1.7% result in fare increases between 1 to 3 cent per trip.
Although insignificant, the 1.7% increase result in fare increases of 1 to 3 cents per trip has led to a ten million dollar - increase in revenue for EACH TRANSPORT COMPANY - as reported by ChannelNewsAsia in its 9pm news.
Every Singaporean - young and old - depend on the public transport system, while it is commendable to see transport fares are adjusted in small painless increment that is insignificant, surely it would have been more appropriate to make an adjustment when more Singaporeans are gainfully employed.
This round of fare increase came in close succession with the recent announcement of increases to utilities charges
The Economy may have a positive outlook in the near term; however, how many Singaporeans continue to see their monthly wages reduced since the last wage and CPF reduction in 2002 ?
How many Singaporeans continue to be employed on short term employment contract of 1 to 2 year - (with or without renewal terms) - as promoted by Manpower Ministry and NTUC for Employers and Employees to accept ?
If the Economy has return to normal, how many Singaporeans are now back to a permanent Employment Contract compared to the present short term and non-renewable employment conditions ? -

The cumulative effect of past increases on the lower income group whose income has stagnated, has not been mentioned in the papers that suppose to report the whole truth.
The fall in the oil prices now at US$64.89 has been omitted despite the fact that its the main excuse for fares increase for taxi comany in August.
And they unabashedly says it is reasonable. -
I think the PTC is just not doing what it ought to do. It's looking more towards the interests of the transport companies rather than that of the public transport users. Looking at the list of members, I don't believe any of them takes public transport regularly. They seem to make their decisions based on figures, statistics and charts rather than actual experience. It's high time the PTC gets a radical revamp.

As everyone expected, the PTC approved the fare hike.
Actually, it was just a question of how much the hike would be.
The lack of competition in our public transport system has paved the way for monopolistic and obscene profits being made at the people's expense, with no improvement in QUALITY or SERVICE.
The disappointing aspect of the PTC's decision is that they did not enact safeguards against the public transport companies to ensure measured improvements in their driver service and quality of buses. Nor did they insist on having periodic reviews of the company's performance.
A better option would have been to put them on year-long probation, with audits and reviews to determine if they deserve their price hike before agreeing in writing. At the very least, the reports may sway the general public as to the reasons backing the hike.
At the rate of consistent increase, perhaps in 5 years time, a bus driver may earn a basic 3K salary, look forward to at least 3 months year-end bonus and with generous welfare benefits.
Perhaps graduates can consider becoming bus drivers after they complete their education. After all, the public transport can take a leaf out of the ARMY-21 concept and advertise: a thinking driver, a thinking transport system. -

Each voucher is worth $20 and can be used to buy or top up EZ-link cards, or to buy monthly concession passes.
$20 is not enough to buy a primary school bus concession. Primary school bus concessions cost $22.50 if I remember correctly...
