S'pore ship for Indonesia
A DECOMMISSIONED Republic of Singapore Navy ship was transferred to the Indonesian Navy in Jakarta yesterday, in a move that symbolises the close and longstanding relationship between the two navies.
The Singapore Defence Ministry and the Indonesian Ministry of Defence yesterday said that the RSS Jupiter was designed to provide support for diving operations and underwater search-and-salvage missions.
It was decommissioned in September, having served the Singapore Navy for 10 years.

We have already given them S260. That I can understand. Giving away Juipter???? That I can't understand. Juipter is a good ship with decent side scan sonar. It can be effectively converted to become a backup minesweeper/mine hunter. Why give up a good ship like that? Does Singapore has too much to be given away just like that? Is there a deeper political motive for such a thingy? -
Next thing Indonesia would be doing is calling us a "little red dot" again, and start complaining that we are not "friendly" neighbours, for not giving them money...

Most of the Indonesian politicians who attack us verbally are usually on their own agenda and do not have the support of the wider public of the government for the matter. These guys are playign up to their own conservative religous segment of the public. Relations on a govermental and militaty level, especially the latter are still extremely close, and I do feel that its much stronger than both countries relationship with our northern neighbour. (There I go stating the obvious again)
Make no mistake, ABRI is not a force to be tampered with over there, no matter what the politicians say, or would like to believe. If we're in ABRI's good books, our relationship with Indonesia would be sound. Full stop.
The SF260s and Jupiter are an extremely small price to pay to ensure security of the southern flank -

Indonesia being supplying Singapore with GAS and lots of natural goods.... of course Singapore have to be nice with Indonesia.
Is not a free stuff, is a trade ... lol.
Then again you lots would prefer to see it as a free items, not too see the whole picture.

BTW, I concur with you that history taught us that it was British who kicked ABRI's arse together with some Aussie and Kiwis diggers. SAF and M'sa soldiers did send troops over to Borneo to help out...
However, I did hear "horror" stories of how ABRI recruited the "man-eating" Dayak tribe in the 60s. Do you guys always know that general Winston Choo (retired) was a radio man then? -
Indonesia & Malaysia Confrontation:
We do have this force involve:
a. 3 Batt. from Malaysia Army
b. 18 British Army personal
c. 2 plat. from Gurkha unit(British Command)
d. 2 plat. SBS from Australia Army
e. 1 plat. SAS from British Army
Malaysia & British govt. ask Australia for help.This undeclare war lasted 4 year with heavy loses on ABRI.
Viper52-There is NO SINGAPORE ARMY involve in it.... not one, maybe because SAF is not around yet.... after all SAF is still new.

1 SIR was operational and defending johor during the confrontasi....
later 1 SIR and 2 SIR was sent to sabah to conduct counter raids into indonesian territory...
overall.... SAF killed quite a number of ABRI troops in johor and kalimantan.... SAF also lost nearly a platoon including the malay platoon commander in Johor due to ABRI's ambush.... but i heard that was avenged.
when singapore separated from malaysia... SAF 1 SIR and 2 SIR was recalled from sabah and was supposed to return to their camps...
but the ungratefull malaysian soldiers refuse to vacate their local camps despite separations and for a period of time 1 SIR and 2 SIR have to make do with field camps... until those ingrates finally packed up and left...
today.... ABRI has grown into a size to nearly 1 million in strength including a 300,000 strong conventional force...
Singapore has also grown from its 2 (half strength) battalion to its present day triservice 500,000 strong including 350,000 reservist.
malaysia...... eh.... 80,000 men with 26 tanks.... -

Counterraids by SAF? ... the teams that did the deep ops. was Australian SAS & Malaysia RMR. British Army did the support with Gurkha army.
As in Johor, Malaysia & Australian Force send around 850 ABRI out.135 dead.
As for Borneo, 180 ABRI dead.
Australia & Malaysia Force lost 127 men during the confrontation.
SAF killed quite a number of ABRI force in Johor & Kalimantan???? When did that happen?? Where is the records?

SAF was introduce because of the Confrontation, to protect Singapore if this would ever happen to Singapore.

What Trip said is true. Malaysia only has 26 tanks, and LIGHT ones at that (Stingrays is it?) , as of 2000, and I dont think the numbers has changed any during the past two years. I got mine from Kinokuniya for $34.50. I dont think one can get more info off the net about the Singapore Armed Forces than from that book.

Let's just say that you would not be able to get more info about SAF off the internet than from that book. Its one of the better military analysis book that I've read so far.

Its a good book, not because it has much new, but because it compiles what has previously been dribs and drabs of information into one handy little reference. -
The ambush was in Kota Tinggi in 1963. Out of a platoon of 25 soldiers, 9 died and 5 injured. Unit involved was 2 SIR.
Apparently the old 2 SIR barracks, which is down Holland Rd after SMM, is a pretty "dirty" place. Rumour is that its linked to the 9... -

About 1963 ... is that the year Singapore were seperated from Malaysia? or much later?
