And you're making yourself look ignorant by stating the blatantly obvious like nobody knows it. The government never apologised, and the cartoon makes fun of that - it's Australians poking fun at themselves, and only the rabid would see otherwise.Originally posted by Typhoon:and.
I know that and you know that- but the self-deprecating nature of the cartoon has been lost on at least one person- namely lionnoisy, who would otherwise not have considered it offensive.Originally posted by Gedanken:And you're making yourself look ignorant by stating the blatantly obvious like nobody knows it. That's entirely your assertion. Living in Australia isn't a requirement, but it helps. I don't see where you got the impression that I implied the contrary, or that absolutes were being used- note "fair amount", "some", and "expect". Not all Singaporeans are completely ignorant. But it is common sense that a local would be more familiar with a domestic issue, and that intelligent people all over the world have difficulty when it comes to foreign matters- only 5% of Australians can name SBY. Personally, I don't blame the Aussies for being unfamiliar with a foreign head of state, even of one of their neighbours.Originally posted by Gedanken:So you're saying that you have to live in Australia to get your facts right?![]()
Then perhaps it is your own inability to discern sarcasm that is at issue here.Originally posted by Gedanken:If you were indeed trying to make a point about Australians taking the Mickey out of themselves, you've certainly failed to express that intent up till this point.

No, I'd agree with you that a fair number of Australians are ignorant of foreign matters, even their journalists. On and off I've complained about Mark Baker, Southest Asian editor for The Age, not being able to get his facts right. Contrary to your assumption, I have no trouble telling Australians when they've gotten their facts wrong - if you're wrong, you're wrong, regardless of where you're from. I have in fact written in to The Age to highlight all of Baker's errors in his articles and questioned why they have such an obnoxious, ignorant redneck as an editor. Oddly enough, they saw fit to refrain from printing the letter.Originally posted by Typhoon:That's entirely your assertion. Living in Australia isn't a requirement, but it helps. By your implication, it would be inexcusable for such astounding levels of ignorance of a non-Australian leader among the Australian population. I have a sneaking suspicion, however, that you'd defend the 95% of Australians who don't know who SBY is. On the other hand I have no trouble imagining you jumping on Singaporeans if 95% of us have never heard of Pak Lah or John Howard.
There has been little coverage of Aborigines in the media here. Its mind-boggling to suggest that the average Singaporean would be more aware of the facts of the matter than the average Australian.

So how did you get from accusing me of ignorance for stating the obvious to accusing me of ignorance for stating the erroneous?Originally posted by Gedanken:However, if you choose to make a point, you owe it to yourself to check your facts first. No sense making a stand when your pants are down, is there? Unlike the 95% of Singaporeans who have chosen to not talk about native title and apologies, you have chosen to comment on the subject. If you don't know about it but still want to talk about it, that's where the ignorance comes in.
I was referring to those Singaporeans who are unaware of the Aboriginal situation, and why it was excusable for them not to be familiar about it, which was in answer to your assertion that I was stating the obvious, although you seem to have changed that position.Originally posted by Gedanken:By putting forward your "how am I suppose to know" defence, you've successfully negated your own excuse of sarcasm. After all, if you already knew the status of the apology situation, why bother drifting into the topic of not knowing because you're in Singapore?
Very well, if you insist on being provided a chronology of this situation.Originally posted by Typhoon:So how did you get from accusing me of ignorance for stating the obvious to accusing me of ignorance for stating the erroneous? I am either wrong or stating the apparent- since both are mutually exclusive, I am curious to understand how you arrived at these conclusions.

I fully agreed with your comment and remarks. Once you are in other ppl country at least show some courtesy and try to get along and not asking the majority to follow and obey the minority.Originally posted by LazerLordz:For those who rant about Australian immigration policies, some of the more extremist opinions we hold here towards migrants, are not exactly bedtime story material as well.
We have widespread tarring of migrants here, and let's be honest here and not try to be hypocrites. I believe Australia should not accept any migrant who is not prepared to adapt him or herself to that culture/society.The same goes for us, no one will put out a welcome mat for someone to come into their house, then diss and rant about how incompatible our furniture is with him.
Then we have to make sure that the minority does not cause more media spotlight than we already need.Originally posted by LittleTiger:I fully agreed with your comment and remarks. We dont feel what the Aussie felt. Cos most immigrant in spore follow the rules and law here and they are just here to make a living and not creating trouble.
