Thanks to the SPH for helping us to censor this letter because it tells too much of the truth and reality and they feel that it is bad for us.

Well written.
I knew a taxi driver like that too. We've became such good friends that I regularly request him for the ride to the airport. He too, was a well educated taxi driver.
At near fifty, he has a wealth of experience but couldn't find work. He was in the electronics/semiconductor industry that was oh-so-hot until our government took a change in policy and switch to IT and now biotech. Left with no choice, he took to driving a cab. But good for him, he is now downunder enjoying retirement life. He's a "quitter". Instead of slogging it out and working for MacDonald's in Singapore, he gave up his citizenship; sold his HDB (didn't get much because it didn't have many more years left on the 99 year lease), took his CPF and now lives in a 20,000 sq ft bungalow and runs a small enterprise.
During our regular conversation, we had came to agree that Singapore is a great place to work and earn money (for now) but a terrible place to retire. Like him, when I earn my keeps, I will sell away everything and move out of Singapore with my family.
However, I disagree that we are loosing our edge in employment. Our govt policies has been and will always be pro-business and it makes absolute sense to employ staff in Singapore (be it Singaporeans or FTs). We have a failed MOM that does not protects its citizens but seems to always agree with companies instead.
Employees in Singapore are not well protected against retrenchment or being fired. It's all good for business.
Even if we loose our edge as employees (we are no longer as bilingual as we claim to be, nor as smart) but we are very employable for the simple reason that there's no hassle in firing anyone. -
I too have tested the Straits Times' Forum editor a few times by writing letters with compliment and letters which are politically sensitive. Usually the letters which are complimenting the government or leaders in some ways will be published and the letters which contain bigger problems and policy errors or suggestions to revise the Constitution of Singapor will be rejected.
I have once written one piece concerning the leadership and corporate governance which was at first accepted but later within the same day rejected by a more powerful editor.
When I emailed the editor to ask why she has rejected my article which the editorial assistant earlier informed me it will be published she claimed that it was published. But searched as I did, I could not find the publication of that article.
If government must control the news media, and if it results in this kind of happenings, there is something seriously wrong which will at the end lead to bigger problems.
That is why there has to be a re-think of all major policies including liberalizing expressions of views and dissent as done by world CSOs.
If therer is no change, government will be creating its own instability and not the press freedoms which actually may help to improve stability and law and order and hiding of problems like the NKF.

As such, it is clearly apparent, that they cannot be questioned or queried as they obviously either DO NOT have a good answer or are incapable of answering questions & policies concerned.

SPH is under the control of PAP therefor they hve all the rights to publish watsoever they feel like!!
Lau Lee spends so much $ n time to close all the alternative press ans media,of course we hve no place to express our views on the main stream of media but down here only 2 cry father cry mother loh!!! -

edit: BTW there's a particular website build called the Freenet that promise electronic freedom of speech through strong anonymity.For now its in development but i wonder if Jason's interested to change to that,as it will promise more protection from the corrupt SPF -

seriously, pap has done great for singapore. i salute lky.
BUT they have lost the plot since the late 80s (my opinion). trying to hold on too much to power is no gd as such regimes, proven by history, will eventually topple. oh and also ever since i realised that he has 2 BG sons and one even became the PM -

I've read the letter in the URL link.
Why they didn't publish it, in my opinion, is that it's just another complaint letter. There's nothing constructive about it. There are no offering of sugguestions or possible solutions. -

They pretend there is no solutions to such problems and do not have the solution not to keep raising fees and fares.
Lower income families are paying 40-60% of their family incomes on bus fare, utilities and medicare.
So there is no solution to such problem - not to increase fees for such essential services costs.
From 1970s, we do not see any particular upgrading or value-adding to the economic competitiveness whereas countries like Korea and Finland because of their broad-based participation by the citizens are becoming more competitive in producing international branded products.
Instead we are selling out our people by importing foreigners as citizens and ignoring solutions to their many problems.
Didn't we elect the ministers and MPs to solve such problems. What did the PAP manifestos have to say.
It looks like once the election is over and they are elected, they do not quite bother about manifestos and all that they will do is to keep contending with the people who complain and call them names like quitters or grousers. Where is their good corporate governance to answer to their duties and responsibilities to the citizens.
They would just keep doing what they want to do for themselves and as long as they could use the press and media to gross over problems that is all they want to do.
What have the post 65ers and the younger ministers have to sayof such a state of governance which is verging on the irresponsible and hypocrisy which is far from the constant talk about the need for leadership, talents and good corporate governance.
They must change and start getting real instead of hiding behind their control press and media. They should practise what they are preaching to everyone. -

When someone calls SM Goh MM Goh, SPH may reserve the rights not to publish it till he/she corrects it.
For someone writing in to SPH, this mistake is outrageous. Not that I'm helping SPH, but this mistake is too blatant to say at the least.
At least proof read before submitting. -
The cureent govt (ruling party) is doing two things;
1) Finding excuses to tell you why your life is so miserable now instead of solving the problems.
2) Doing hip-hop and trying to "connect" with you so that you'll continue to vote for them. -
PM Lee should consider himself very lucky. He earns, according to China News Agency, about 300000 bucks per month, and Chinese Premier (president) earns only 1/136 times, about 2000 dollars, Singapore dollars used here.
Many people here, I assume, earn more than the Chinese President, but who earns as much as the leader of one of the smallest countries in the world? -
I'm beginning to feel that the world's richest chap might not be Gates, but MM and Family.
