Yaacob to Sylvia Lim: Don't WAYANG okay?

The above report carries a reply from Mr Yaacob to the WP's press release (http://www.wp.sg/news/press_releases/20061012_haze.htm) published yesterday in the Straits Times and TODAY (http://www.todayonline.com/articles/148636.asp)
Far more Singaporeans would have read the newspaper reports than the actual WP article on their website.
Two important pieces of information were not published in the article by TODAY:
1. Ms Sylvia Lim was aware that the Government has attempted to tackle the haze issue since 1991:
"As early as 1992, the then Environment Minister Dr Ahmad Mattar told Parliament that the government would work with the Indonesian government to look into the problem of the haze from forest fires in Indonesia."
2. Ms Lim had also listed out the milestones that should be set for Indonesia:

The article ends off with Ms Lim's acknowledgement of the difficulty involved which was not reported in the original press release:
She added: "We also recognise that the enforcement for these cross-border problems is always very challenging. If there is a timeline for Indonesia to work to, at least there are some milestones for us to look at, and see if there's any progress."
Did Mr Yaacob reply to Ms Lim's proposals?
We find it surprising that Mr Yaacob make no mention of Ms Lim's milestones in his "reply". Instead of engaging the WP on the haze issue, he chose to interpret the press release as "unhelpful criticism" and defend the government's "track record". Was his reply intended for Singaporeans or Ms Lim? -
What's new, the gahmen will play politics at every opportunity. Sometimes I wonder if they are pro-Party rather than pro-Singapore.

I'm one that always believe that our assessment of any matter must be met with reason and not be guided solely by emotions. But now, I really dun bother even clicking on that link and looking through the facts of the issue. Yeah, I'm just reticent towards the entire situation as things stand.

By not addressing the important points raised by Sylvia and simply dismissing her off as trying to score political points, he was actually the one trying to gain political mileage.

More critically is whether the haze should be examine as a problem face by Asean nations together instead of single out and enforcing rigid timeframe for Indonesia. From my humble undestanding of the ASEAN Agreement on Transboundary Haze Pollution, the document served to coordinate and seek joint cooperation with nations to better ratify the 'hazy' situation and not to meddle with Indonesia sovereignty as a state on decision making.

What our Minister Of Env had done to deal with this problem?? Is he talking c n singing song to leave the problem as it is by just stated there is no easy solutiom!!!! What he is paid for??? just to express this shti thing!!!
Cant even solve the dosmestic matter like haze in Asean countries? talking big to be a first world country,shamelss Spore Ministers!!!

Yes!!! They won't admit their fault or problems. They only know how to pin point or push their responsibity to people. Take example for Dengue fever outbreak.....they will keep telling people to do this to do that at their homes....Originally posted by foomwee88:Precisely the point!!!

I live in chai chee in a flat at lower floor....almost all my family members got dengue and admitted to hosiptal in late 2004..and of course...medical expenses had cost me a bomb.
I wrote an e-mail complianing to the branch office about the chokages of surface drainage, low bed shrubs such as lily, bird nest ferns that grow on trees and etc. Now, these are the plants that would collect water and create stagnant water for mosquitoes breedings...especially prolonged raining days or season over a week or more.
I received no reply. But after sometimes...they quietly pruned all the low shrubs, flower beds and conrete it into concrete pavements or hardgrounds.
I had even ask for compensation for medical expenses that I had spent for all my family members ...but I heard nothing from them...as if nothing had been heard or happened. -

GLCs and govt agencies are breeding grounds for the scholar elite. The rest of the employees just make up the numbers. That's not to say they are incapable people, but will forever be 2nd rate versus the scholar elite. The lack of questioning decisions is not practiced, ideas are not nurtured, save those from the scholarly cadre.
Dr Yaccob Ibrahim's response to Sylvia Lim's statement concering the Haze underlines a growing problem among the Ruling Party: in their paranoid state, they will view any statement from alternatives with contempt and disdain. Not only will they widely preceive any such statement, no matter how harmless it may sound, as a threat to their political security but will vehemently and 'robustly' strike them down as soon as they are aired.
Actually i prefer them to carry on in this manner, using cannons to respond to pea-shooters. The more high-handed they are, the more people will see them as nothing more than 'disconnected' from reality and the people, ignoring the concerns of voters and going on a political mileage campaign. -
The way Yaacob defensively and irresponsibly responded to Sylvia Lim's concerns
clearly indicates to me that the TT Durai and NKF-type Sagas are still very much alive. -

But you should know that none of our govt officials or agencies have ever accepted resposibility for their mistakes, whether honest or reckless ones. Remember the yound boy who was killed by an eroded lamp post? Sigh....
They are also known to have used others' ideas/feedback without acknowledgement or giving due credits. You can check this out with Chiam See Tong.
But i would think the haze issue is rather tricky cos it concerns entrenched widespread corruption in a huge country. -

Indonesia will not give a damn no matter wat he said coz he just a small fly in a little red dot nia. Not even GCT or Lee senior can solved this problem. For Indonesia to win a war against Sg, just burn and burn and burn for 2 years non stop and we are dead. No need state of tha art fighter planes, warships, assault rifle. Just a cheap match stick will do.

What track record?? hmmm...we all know nothing can be done about the haze problem...All Sillypore can do is issue health advisories and keeping the kids indoors....We are all helpless to do anything
You all really think Indonesia will let other countries tell them what to do? For goodness sake....its a bribe culture over there...you bribe me, I bribe you and we all live happily together....except for us surrounding countries that have to put up with the stench that Indonesia produces..
This is a classic example of all talk and no action and ASEAN is a useless organization. Let's face it, Asia or rather SEA culture is all about face....Asians want face more than any other cultures.....give me face, give me face so no action is taken. Indonesia says they will deploy soldiers to put out the fire. Rubbish.....Why didn't they deploy them earlier...probably they should deploy the soldiers to wipe out those that started the fire with their M-16s or something...more effective...
Come next year and the next and at least for the next 10-20 years, the haze will always be there....One more reason why we should all leave Sillypore rather than ckoke on INdonesian filth -
