FT debate: Should FTs serve NS?

Immigrants, should serve NS, not just their children. What's stopping the govt from introducing a pro-rated NS for them, perhaps under 2PDF. It can be weekend reserve training and induction.
If the Americans and Australians can introduce a weekend NG/Territorial Army style of low-intensity training, we should be able to run similar systems. The only difference is the goal and the originating factor.

Should FTs serve NS? Can you imagine our Honorary Citizen and Nobel Prize winner Sydney Brenner serving NS at the age of 70? 80?
I think you meant FTs who converted to Singaporean citizenship should be serving NS? And not just their kids. Like this, most people will opt to take up PR and not citizenship.
Anyway, what additional benefits do you have as a Singaporean over a PR?
- Some housing subsidies
- Free library card
- Right to vote
- Free food, lodging and clothes during NS
- ??? -
Maybe they should go for NS but have lesser days for reservist. Afterall. i dont think FTs are very young ppl in the first place and they all come to Singapore is to sponge money out of us.
Also, the government wouldnt even hear of this. Imagine mistreating the government's apple of the eye...they are the higher class ppl or as what the government might be thinking.. -

Can you imagine an FT who racing side by side, and you expect him to cover your behind? Really, they cant just be shoved into the NS system.
there is a difference you know. We were drilled that NS is something of an inevitable journey...(which i'm doing ah...darn)...and that we need to serve our part for the country...(nothing against the country...but gahmen...thats a different story...)...
FT's aren't really schooled in the same way...and besides...

Jokes was going around that purpose of NS is to protect Singapore's large population of FTs.
But for FT to serve NS ? The emotion would say YES, but the logical conclude otherwise. Why ?
ANS:
FT are here to serve Singapore's economic interest, not military.
And economy strength is a component of defence doctrine.
Hence u might say FTs are just another form of a white-collaed mercenaries.
Let's say some basak general wanna lob 155m rounds into this little Red Dot. He'll gonna think twice as there is a high chance of hitting some FT$ with ve$ted intere$t on this little rock.
So what if the war does come to Singapore, what happened to those FT ?
I thought over many times over and arrived to another conclusion:
Shot them.
Why?
1st: Some may post a threat. (both economic and militarily)
2nd: Many will occupy the limited bomb shelters and rationed resources that are meant for Singaporeans.
3rd: Most FT males have no military experience nor the incentives to fight.
This really drastic, isn't it ? Totally inhumane. I agree.
To avoid such blood shed, some creative thinking is needed to save these FT lives. So during times of war, like in any other, laws will be subjected to changes to meet national interest:
Eg:
1) Mandatory blood donation.
2) If FT wanna do a quick exit, require him/her to retain cash (CPF/savings/gold) in local banks and financial inst. This is partly to prevent sudden exist of money which easily trigger a dominal effect on the economy.
However, times has changed. Money/machines/men can be transfered from one location to another today's world. And that change includes new multi-spectrum of warfare: Terrorism
That makes FT element an even more complicated one.
Think Bali 12Oct'02. The intended target is obvious.
Think Holland village 13Nov??.
What do you think the intended target is for ?
So now we see local security upping the alarm having no-carparks/extra security checks especially for FT favour haunts and playgrounds.
So that the joke at the beginning of this story IS correct:

At the end of the day, it is better off to be a FT.
So have your kids born in JB, let them be educated in Singapore, and work in Singapore. Be a FT and get Singapore citizenship. -
your average US soldier would probably be called carlos or juan instead of jones or smith

Media Release: Singaporeans suffer under the foreign talent policy

The recent report showing that 70 percent of jobs created in 2006 went to foreigners is not a revelation.
In 2003, a group of professors from the Nanyang Technological University (NTU) reported that three out of four jobs created in the past five years went to foreigners.
Then, the Ministry of Manpower immediately issued a statement to denounce the NTU's findings and produced its own figures: That nine out of ten newly created jobs went to the locals.
The professors quickly withdrew their report, citing computational errors.
The SDP had, at that time, asked the Government to hold an inquiry to ascertain the truthfulness of the economists' report and not merely bully them into silence.
Four years have passed and it is clear that the professors were right. Worse, Singaporeans have had to continue to suffer in silence under the PAP Government's ill-conceived policy even though it is reported that a majority of people want a more judicious application of the foreign talent (Sunday Times, 14 Jan 07).
The Singapore Democrats repeat our stand: The foreign talent policy must be re-examined so that only foreigners with the requisite skills are allowed to work in Singapore.
We proposed the Singaporeans First Policy back in 2001 where we wanted foreigners to get the jobs only when we cannot find Singaporeans with the necessary skills to do them.
The PAP Government is desperately trying to make-up for the stunted population growth that resulted from its cruel and myopic Stop-at-Two family planning policy by flooding the society with foreign nationals.
The resultant economic and social consequences from such an unthinking move will yet manifest themselves in horrendous ways, if they have not already.
In addition, the Government refuses to acknowledge that the slow birthrate in Singapore is primarily due to the high cost of living and stressful lifestyle in our society which deters couples from wanting more children.
It also ignores the fact that the exodus of Singaporeans, most of whom possess talent and skills our country needs, to other countries is a result of the suffocating system created by the PAP.
It is clear that the Government not only has no intention of owning up to these problems it created, but now seeks to plaster over them by encouraging the indiscriminate influx of foreign workers.
Its main objective, of course, is to suppress the wages of working Singaporeans so that we can claim to be a “competitive” economy.
This race to the bottom is doomed to failure. It merely exploits the vulnerable to make the vulnerable even more vulnerable. It also ensures that while the rich get richer, the poor are consigned to an even bleaker future.
It escapes no one that the ministers continue to peg their salaries to the richest of the rich in Singapore, and ignore the plight of ordinary Singaporeans. The Government is able to do this only because the people have had their voices taken away.
The only remedy to this, and other problems that citizens face, is for the people to regain their political rights to free speech and peaceful assembly. Only when citizens are able to physically congregate en masse and speak freely will the Government sit-up and pay attention.
