So if you need to plan for such times
1) work hard to a HAF position
2) save alot $ don't include CPF, it cannot help much
3) enlarge and strength personal/business network
4) migrate
5) headbud the train
My mum was actually retrenched when she was in her early 40+ during the 97 economic crisis. She didn't have a very high edu, A level but with results that "no uni in the world in their right mind will accept" kind of standard. She actually found a job pretty soon after that, about 2-3 months. She was in the job for less than a year, decided that the environment wasn't any good and left the job for another and stayed in it was 3-4 years until the company was ermmm... liquidated. Not long after that, she found another job again in Chan Brothers at the age close to 50.
All the jobs' pay are not very high, 1500 +-, but hey, its decent enough for one to get by. Somemore, people can always "ride the donkey but looking for horses", don't mind the low pay first, at least get some income while you are looking for a job no?
