Twice Bitten By Loan Sharks

deep in debt with illegal moneylenders, they are forced to help syndicate transfer money for their racket.
the 25, aged between 20 and 65, were charged for letting ring members use their bank accounts. 7 were jailed between 8-10 weeks for being unable to pay the fines dealt to them, while the others were fined between 20k and 50k.
these people are either taxi drivers, housewives or salesmen.
can you believe this? they owed the loan sharks between 500 to 2k only.
take a look at the amount they were fined!!!!

The rationale that I can think of for such a decision is that the convicts are accessories of crime. I mean sure, these are not bad people, but they are crucial to these loan sharks in their unlawful deeds. If these people are not punished harshly and highly publicised, many more people will do what these people are doing, passively helping the loan sharks, which only assist the loan sharks in harming even more people of similar financial status. Now that these people are punished harshly, and highly publicised, it would be less likely for others who hope to get an easy way out of their 500-2k debt to become an accessory of crime. Yes, sure, there will still be those who will be really desperate and has no other choice, but they are not the intented target, the ruling is perhaps aiming at people who, like the accused, are looking for an easy way out without considering for others who are in similar situation.

If its for proper purposes, I think in most cases its still possible to get a legitimate loan for 500-2000, not necessary from bank, but from friends and relatives. The fact that they choose to borrow from loan sharks suggest that they might want to borrow the money in discreet, perhaps not for a very good purpose too such as gambling. i think something is very very wrong here.. the law has now just made the poor poorer. what's the basis of slapping the fines on these pple? they were victims of poverty and yet they have been punished.
i read the article.. some even just say that they would rather just go to jail..
i think this is sad.. come to think of it.. these pple are the ones who could be the next to throw themselves onto an oncoming MRT train.
I would have thought that the judge would have exercised certain amount of discretion and understand their situation better and offer them counselling instead of making life more miserable. -

logically a gambler wont borrow such a small sum. -

Those who owe loan sharks...only have to convince themselves not to anything illegal.

Shd learnt from my uncle's friend....amazng mindset.
He says "Borrow from loan shark, no rush to return". We ask him why he not scared, he says scare what?
Harass your house? Harass lor. I just keep quiet in my house...how long can you stay outside my house? No need to eat or sleep ah?
Splash paint? Splash lor. I dun repaint. A while later you will know paint also need to purchase. Then you know purchasing paint will be eating into your operation cost and you will stop.
Chain my gate? I got a very good pair of cutter...Made in Germany, high quality. Padlock also no prob.
Threaten me? Threaten lor. YOu can touch me...lay a finger on me and you will get rotan (punishment of Law). YOu can approach me, I will grab you and shout 'robbery'. Ppl will help me grab you until Police come. I say you slap me and threaten to kill me...you will go to jail, not fine.
Burn my house? You wanna play so big, burn lor. Not my house, its HDB's one. I am still paying for it. Then its not pressing ppl to return money, its murder when you burn ppl house with ppl inside.
Then he says if you can tahan the harassment, you get to keep the money you borrowed. And give your family good money constantly to 'compensate' them to endure the harassment.
I ask him liddat like cheating loanshark, he say got some he want to return, but the numbers the loan shark change and they 'lost contact'. Wait until kenna 4D then repay lor.
In total, he get to keep a total of $20,000/-++ he borrowed in all from loan shark. Super positive guy right? -

There are many ppl in Sg didn't plan well financially. They are thinking of selling the house to cash in. I'm not surprise to see more cases like this to happen cos more jobless and low pay drain saving faster than they earn.
