This debate is elistism is a hot topic because by definition, the majority of forumites are non-elites. Elites must mean a select few.
How are today's elite selected? For students, it is mostly by academic results. So RJ = elites. This is not the only way to select the elite. For adults, those who made it to high corporate positions or earn big bucks = elites (doesn't whether they are from good schools or not). Whatever criteria you use, you will always have an elite who are ranked best by the selection process. There is no way all people are equally talented in every department. The bottom line is that you have to live with the fact that there will always be elites.
The existence of elites is not the problem by itself. The problem arise only when the elites look down on the rest. Elites Wee Shu Min should remember that while she may not need to look up to many people because she is smarter than average, she should also not look down on the people who are losers or slackers. However, because we often harp on Singapore being a meritocratic society, it takes some effort to accept losers and slackers amongst us. -

It doesn't matter if you are better off in many ways than others, and surely no one will take offence if you are smarter, more eloquent and generally more well off / academically inclined/ physically endowed/.

While it is important one should have self-esteem to place oneself above others, it does not equate to elitism.

Maybe you are right that in JCs, there are people who really think that way, that of getting a degree is everything etc. I personally has been thru both the JC system and the Poly system.
To be fair, there are black sheeps in both and there are alot of people from both system who would "die" when they get out into the society and work. Its not fair to just flame the JCs students.

I said that because i believe they are immature not because they are posting the comments from the view they see.
Being that age, i feel that they are still sheltered and the world around them is still being fed by their education. -
Sometimes I feel people like this need to live for a month or two in the shoes of the working class.
Better position in life to aquire status and regard? Prehaps. A better human being? I think that's one thing they are often far from being elite in... and it tells. -
one more or two? they will treat it as a holiday since they will only get to experience normal non-elitist life for only a few months and won't understand how hard it is to live in the long run.
