but seriously i thought plastic bags were used favourably especially among big supermarkets since it can double up as a form of 'advertisement' for their premise.
this enviromental tax thingy seems like another excuse to squeeze more juice out of the community.. -

There are places where people naturally love their habitat and take the effort to ensure their environment is protected without extra levy or costs and it was done so that everyone can enjoy the riches of the environment. Why don't we learn from these places then always whipping the people with fines/tax/penality like an animal to get compliance. Its really uncreative on the part of the policy maker and the loss of respect toward them continues while we know better having seen a bit of the world... -
It won't discourage people here from using plastic bags if they can't care less about conserving limited natural resources. They'll simply pay for it and grumble about increased costs.

In the first place, we have never really had a culture where the use of plastic bags was discouraged. If anything, I can still remember my primary school Science textbooks exhorting on us the need to bag all rubbish in plastic bags before tossing them down the chute.
I believe a more reasonable tactic would be to discourage the unnecessary use of plastic bags and to encourage the use of alternatives such as paper bags where possible. Just like Devil, I've also had many a scenario where I rejected the offer of a plastic bag when I was buying only one or two items only to get odd looks from the cashiers.
I''d say not to implement the tax - but to discourage the use of plastic bags.
People's mentalities can't change overnight - but it doesn't mean that we can't try. -

I've just thought of an excellent idea!
For every plastic bag given to consumers, the store will have to give the consumer 5cents.
This will surely reduce the use of the bags -
If there is a tax, it should be a tax on corporations. They are the ones who can make a difference. They are the ones in the best position to change attitudes. Hence they are in the best position to be 'encouraged' to change consumer habits.
easy peasy.
Anyway its silly to even bother about plastic use. Let other countries take the lead. We can see how things go before jumping in. Sg has done well by adopting this strategy in many areas of public administration. -
