"We should not be a welfare state. But we have to be more effective in reaching out to those who need help. "We want to maintain this 'Teach you how to fish rather than give you a fish' approach, but are we really teaching the person to fish correctly? I think we can do more to help Singaporeans in that aspect. We don't have to change our basic philosophy to do that."
MR INDERJIT SINGH, an MP for ANG MO KIO GRC
I applaud MR Inderjit Singh for the approach to teach us ' how to fish ' so that singaporeans can be self sufficient instead of relying on welfare. Let me put my few concern forward to Mr Inderjit Singh.
First of all , putting food on the table, cloth on oneself, ever rising cost of transport, electricity, HDB housing etc etc is much more complicated than just to know how to fish. Since the anology used here is about fishing, let's talk on simple fishing terms.
Let's assume that 100% of Singaporean had benefitted from the MP approach that we all know how to fish. And our surrounding waters are the fishing ground. (Overseas market) Our reservoir are the local ground (Singapore market).
For those who knows something about fishing, you will know that basic fishing tools cost money to buy. ( In order to start earning money, education , courses, upgrading of oneself had to be invested ). Then, we start to go fishing in a Reservoir. (Singapore MArket). We walked past the edge of the reservoir with our fishing tools and was delighted to see big fishes swimming around. We decided on a spot and try to throw our line when a ranger (Gahment policy) come to you and tell you that you cannot fish here. He point to you a fishing spot for people to fish. You pack up your tools and headed to the spot only to find the short strip for fishing crowded. But nonetheless, you hook up your live worms and was about to throw into the water when the ranger points out that you cannot use live bait.( A fine will be imposed) ( Hey, everyone knows that live bait attract fishes much better ). Again, you keep your live bait and put on a artificial bait. You cast the lure (artificial bait) for whole day and not a single fish on hook.
From just the above fishing experience, that's how our society is functioning. Too many restriction by the gahment. ( Unfair restriction ) So what if we know how to fish? Are we allow to fish freely? Remember the food van saga, the idea will work but because of the many restriction imposed, the idea died, so do many who spend their savings buying the van and doing up (Fishing apparells).
The thing here is not only about teaching people how to fish correctly, but rather, lift the restriction for people to fish.
Talking no need MoneyEven in Africa Sahara with most extreme climate and environment..... healthy lions will still share their kills with the injured or older Lions.....
Lions could recognise or appreciate the older Lions past contributions to their group therefore in return they shared their kills with the older ones. We......? Here in singapore.......the elites take no heel and insisted that we have to survive solely on our own.
By helping the poors...our great govt gives pay-as-you-use cash card for utilities....what a joke!!!
