The people's socio-political education has been ignored and sidelined since the 70s, therefore you have one working generation who is pretty much depoliticised and couldn't be arsed if they lost their job tmrw due to screwups by those in power.
They will not take concrete action to aggregate their voices and their votes to demand a change because like any consumerist society, consumption comes first, ideas second.
We have not reached that state of self-actualisation. I wonder at times if we ever will, because we have leapfrogged development stages and the electorate is enjoying the fruits of popular culture, comfort items and consumption basically inures oneself against risking all that is happy and sleek in their lives for an idea. -

Under such a state control on its people, the people withdraw from participation in views and lose their intellect, will and reasoning power.
You are right - a whole generation has been reduced into zombies and are living in some sorts of stupor. They will continue to flow with the ebbing tide and unable to steer the boat to any specific direction. They will not restore their sense of direction for a long long time and would be leaving things as they are. The autocrat happily refers to this phenomenon to the IMF/WTO chief as stability, law and order. -
I dun think the government can help much... They can only help the older generations and provide the best education possible for the young... The younger generations(80s babies onwards) should crave a niche for themselves...
I tink many of the young are able to Think, but some are juz too corky... -

Just to add, the young who grows in s'pore will experience the dark and the bright sides of life. The dark sides are the unjust, the oppression of employers, the rejections, the isolation, the struggle, the cost of living - brought about by globalisation, compeitition, and the imperfections of country's policies.
When they reach 30s to 60s, they will be just like me/us, trying to point out the dark sides of ourselves, and not really asking the gov to help us, but asking to make the dark sides a little brighter.
If the dark remains dark and becomes darker, when they reach 60s-100s, they will be like us also....self-fish, unwilling to volunteer, complain only, push everything to the gov...
