Causeway Should Be Removed: Johor Sultan

The sultan of Johor caused a stir during his address at the launch of the south Johor Economic Region (SJER) yesterday when he digressed from his written text and said the Causeway should be removed.
To the shock of the 2,000 people present and thousands of viewers watching a live telecast of the launch on television, Sultan Mahmood Iskandar said it was built by colonialists who had used dirty tactics to deceive his ancestors.
He said the Causeway was built to prevent ships from passing through local waters, resulting in the development of Keppel Port in Singapore instead.
“The Causeway has to be removed to allow ships to pass,” the Sultan said before launching the multibillion-dollars SJER. At this juncture, the audience burst into laughter and applauded.
In his address, the Sultan, who was clad in a T-shirt, said he would not “give face” (bagi muka) to the foreigners (Mat Sallehs) and urged the people not to hold them in high regard, He also told the locals to be wary of the foreigners as they were vultures.
With the SJER, the Sultan hoped Johor would be transformed into a global economic centre.
“I hope the SJER will bring benefits to the people of Johor,” he said, adding that he was confident it would be a success. -
SingaporeÂ’s Response
In response to press queries about the Sultan of Johor’s remarks, a Singapore Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesman said: “I found the remarks rather curious. I don’t believe it represents the Malaysian government’s position.” -

Sultan Mahmood Iskandar admitted that his ancestors had been deceived by the Mat Sallehs. It gets me to wonder whether Sultan knows that he had been deceived by those who advise him about this issue now – to remove the Causeway and to treat foreigners (including Singaporean?) like vultures.

The feeling I have is that other than Malays who are bumiputra, all remaining Malaysians are second class (non-bumi). Sultan said, Mat Sallehs (foreigners) are to be treated as vultures and not to be hold in high regard. Are Singaporean who intend to invest in SJER or visit Johor are Mat Sallehs? When you are being referred to as like vulture – what image comes to mind? I think this is the general feeling being pushed by Sultan against Singaporean. I wonder is this the type of thinking that caused the crime rate in Johor to be high – foreigners and non-bumi being treated as vultures (wrongs to be done upon with impunities). Like the foreigners in the resort island being hammered by the “Tenkus”

The trouble is that Sultan’s comment is being followed-up by his “subjects” who act like mini-Sultans. The mini-Sultans take the cue from the Sultan. If u sit down and think carefully, u will feel that wad the Sultan said is true to a certain extend. Especially the part on preventing ships using the johor straits and thus contributing to the development of Keppel, Singapore etc.

How to put them right, with out breaking the international laws? Not by force but negotiation to a common understanding. If negotiation is unsuccessful, then it will be status quo. -

The Johor Royalty has been filled with succession intrigue since the early days of Singapore's founding.
The present Sultan of Johor had succeeded to the throne under a cloud of accusation that he forged and altered his dying father's will that would have allowed his younger brother to be the sultan.
Singapore was ceded to the British East India Company from a treaty with the rightful Sultan of Johor, who was away in Penang when his father died, leaving his brother by the dying father's side to usurp the throne and resulting in an internal squabble between royal brothers.
The Sultanate of Johor had received annual stippance from the British East India Company as part of the treaty conditions - and was not forced onto the Sultanate as suggested by the present Johor Sultan in his speech.
The idea of having ships sailing from Tuas to Changi is a fallacious idea propounded by ex-PM Mahathir.
The supporting piers of the Second Link Bridge are so close to each other, and even at the highest point of the Bridge, it can hardly accomodate any LCCL Cargo Vessel operated by Maersk or EvaGreen.
A bridge to replace the Causeway is another one of ex-PM Mahathir's mega-Ringgit Project that allows political funds to be built up, and loyalist supporter to be rewarded which will result in funds leaked.
It is surprising that Johoreans learnt that in the entire State of Johor, there are only 14 ambulances for emergency calls, while mega-millions are spent on huge projects and the infrastructure that benefit the people directly are forgotten.
What could be the reason for the present Johor Sultan to get tangled in this politics of replacing the Causeway ?
Perhaps money is to be made. -
