I don't think that he was charged for the gassing.. I think he was being the charge killing 148 for trying to assassinate him.. the irony. I thought the US would do the same thing.. if those 148 were to shoot at them.
Honestly, it wasn't it surprising verdict, since he was tried in a Kangaroo court. -

Saddam is a tyrant and he deserves the guilty verdict for the crimes he had perpetuated against both the Shites and the Kurds, no questions about that.

Not a fan of the death penalty myself. However, Saddam was tried in accordance with Iraqi law, and must accept whatever punishment meted out, even if it means execution.
The main concern I have is whether Saddam's execution will turn him into some sort of martyr for his supporters. -
In any case Saddam isn't getting off the hook, even if Bush is guilty.

I'm more concerned about the stability of Iraq and less concerned if letting him serve a life term is a blow to the Iraqi judiciary.
I say, let him live, but lock him up in a max. security prison without parole.
But the other hand would be a radical turnaround and offer him to be a mediator. -

Is Saddam the one who started the Iran- Iraq War on 22 Sept 1980 by invading Iran ? It is where extensive use of chemical weapons by Iraqi forces against Iranian troops, Iranian civilians and Iraqi Kurds
Is he not again the one who invaded Kuwait on 02 August 1990 that caused widespread destruction and looting of Kuwaits' properties. Even til today,many Kuwaitis are still struggling to deal with the effects of being tortured, while they were held prisoner, either in Kuwait or in Iraq.
This is the man that caused so much suffering not only to his country men but also to the Middle Easten Muslims world. I do agree that he should not be charged in iraq to be hang but be charged in Middle East Muslim Islamic court under the Sharia law where he be get flogged, amputated and crucified. -
