About Democracy and the Colonial Government: 1956
"If we say that we believe in democracy, if we say that the fabric of a democratic society is one which allows for the free play of idea...then, in the name of all the gods, give that free play a chance to work within the constitutional framework."
- Opposition leader Lee Kuan Yew, 1st Legislative Assembly, Oct 4, 1956
About training dogs – and Singaporeans 8 Nov 05
"Mine is a very matter-of-fact approach to the problem. If you can select a population and they're educated and they're properly brought up, then you don't have to use too much of the stick because they would already have been trained. It's like with dogs. You train it in a proper way from small. It will know that it's got to leave, go outside to pee and to defecate. No, we are not that kind of society. We had to train adult dogs who even today deliberately urinate in the lifts."
- Lee Kuan Yew on Singapore society, The Man & His Ideas, 1997
"Whereas it is the inalienable right of a people to be free and independent, I ... declare on behalf of the people and the government of Singapore that Â… [we] shall be forever a sovereign, democratic and independent nation, founded upon the principles of liberty and justice and ever seeking the welfare and happiness of her people in a more just and equal society."
- Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew, eve of separation from Malaysia Aug 8, 1965

"Precious" - it is an irony that you should adopt this word for yourself, when you hardly appreciate the agonisingly precious time that one spent in jail; or what the likes of JBJ and CSJ is doing to embarrass the Government and the MIW for their political and philosophical hypocrisy.Originally posted by :5 weeks oni ah.....? They need the lefties to get power from the people. It is through the people's power that enable them to get control over the people. So democratic election is the people's selection of their own master. What slavery is that!!Originally posted by vito_corleone:funny how every leader leans towards the left before he has power in his grasp and crushes his opponents like ants when he has the muscles to.![]()

What has CSJ done for his own party and for Singapore? Who can remember what he has said in Parliament? This is a man who has ousted his party founder and brought down the most promising Opposition party of the time by his selfish ambition. He will be remembered for his useless dramatic gestures like hunger strike (during which he cheated) and vitriolic attacks against his own country overseas.Originally posted by Hogzilla:What makes you think so?
I feel sad for Lee Kuan Yew,Lee Hsien Loong n Goh Chok Tong, their names are going to get stinked for years to come by jailing an innocent man who persue democracy for this country.Originally posted by monoslayer:i feel sad for his wife n 3 kids.![]()
That is correct. His approach clearly doesn't go well with the Singaporean psyche. However, I do not think he is really in it for the votes as he must know that he is not going to get much, if any.Originally posted by LazerLordz:CSJ has changed to being a lobbyist and activist than a politician in the sense of word that regular Singaporeans understand it to be.
Why this shift in approach? The reasons have been thrashed about in all media. But my analysis tells me that he will not run Singapore because for the reason that he is not a natural politician. He is first and foremost an academic with a burning desire to right what he sees as wrongs.

I think if he keeps this up, history will treat him well.

Under his leadership, SDP has declined from being a threat to the ruling party to become a joke in the political scene. He does not inspire confidence in both local citizens and foreign investors. But I do not have to worry about him ever ruling Singapore....he won't.
While the ideals and vision of the SDP is embodied in Dr. Chee, he is by no means ‘the Party’. He is simply its voice. He alone cannot engineer or oust Mr. Chiam without the combined, voting capacity of the Central Executive Committee and the cadres of the SDP. The SDP, the Party being democratic and not autocratic or monastic, believed that it was time to have a change for leadership to steer it in the right direction. That was why Dr. Chee ‘took over’ Mr. Chiam’s role as Secretary General. Mr. Chiam resigned from the SDP in 1993. The Party and/or Dr. Chee did not ‘kick him out’ --- a myth which The Straits Times has and had propagated, a myth which so many Singaporeans so readily swallow without question.
Hence, let the following facts be now known:
Mr. Chiam See Tong of the Singapore PeopleÂ’s Party (SPP) RESIGNED as Secretary-General of the Singapore Democratic Party (SDP) in 1993.
Even then the SDP held back releasing this news for one month in the hope that they could persuade him to change his mind.
The SDP only went public AFTER Mr. Chiam refused to yield and insisted that for him to come back as the Sec-Gen., he must be given the powers to appoint CEC and cadre members (in effect, single-handedly controlling the party). This is undemocratic as this is what many SDP members joined the Party to fight the PAP on.
Mr. Chiam then decided to go to the Singapore Press Club, which has never been friendly to the Opposition to run down his colleagues and leaders of the party, leaders which members freely elected.
(All members had earlier on signed an oath -- that no member shall criticize the party publicly after they left it.)
It was only then that the Party voted to expel Mr. Chiam.
