I tell you lah, Singapore most famous surname is derived from a fruit.
During the late Shang period, an official of the Shang Dynasty adviced on the King and kenna executed because of that. His families ran to a place where wild plums were planted and they survive the hunger because of these plums.
Because the pronouncation of their surname, Li (different Li, only the pronouncation is the same), so they use their surname to name the fruit. Then they also adopt the name of the fruit as their the surname and are called Li (meaning plum).

My surname?
My ancestor is one of the many feudal lord in the Shandong province, but was destroyed by the Qi. Because the land that they were conferred to was by the name, tan, so they adopt the land's name as their surname lor.
Also got another origin lah. The natives in Sichuan Basin, rumoured to be descendant of Pan'gu, took Pan'gu's name as their surname, aka Pan. Then as time goes by, the pronoucation began to sound similar to those of "tan", so they change their surname to tan liao lor. -

In the Late Warring period in China, Chu destroyed the Luo state. Because the decendants of the Luo state were disgusted with Chu's action in killing their own brother, they dun use the same surname as them and use their conferred state's name, Luo, as their surname.

I have a book written by a China author that compiles the Hundred Surnames (Bai3 Jia1 Xing4) that is written in Song dynasty. The book speaks of origins of the Surnames.
I bought it a few years ago and I dunno whether is it still on the shelf nowadays. -

Anyway, South Korean's version of "Lim" is called "Im". North Korean version is called "Lim" also. I think the South Korean version sounds cooler. -

One is about Bi3 Gan1. During the last Shang emperor's reign, King Zhou of Shang ordered him to commit suicide. His decendant fled into a forest. After the King was overthrown, King Wu of Zhou conferred them the surname of Lin (meaning forest).
Another one speaks of a son of King Ping of Zhou. His name is Lin (forest). He is also very close to the people. After he died, his decendants uses his name as their surname. That's the other origin of the surname, Lin. -
