My ancestor is one of the many feudal lord in the Shandong province, but was destroyed by the Qi. Because the land that they were conferred to was by the name, tan, so they adopt the land's name as their surname lor.
Also got another origin lah. The natives in Sichuan Basin, rumoured to be descendant of Pan'gu, took Pan'gu's name as their surname, aka Pan. Then as time goes by, the pronoucation began to sound similar to those of "tan", so they change their surname to tan liao lor.
