MAKHACHKALA, Russia -
A Jordanian who commanded foreign mercenaries in Chechnya and was reportedly al-QaidaÂ’s top emissary in the troubled North Caucasus has been eliminated during a special operation, security officials said.
“The involvement of Jordanian citizen Abu Khavs in crimes committed on the territory of the Chechen Republic has been established and he has been put on the international wanted list,” a spokesman for the prosecutor’s office has said.
According to Russian intelligence data, Abu Khavs headed the terrorist network in the North Caucasus after Khattab and Abu Valid had been eliminated.
Apart from Arab hireling Abu-Havs, security officers destroyed also a Chechen and two local residents. According to the local FSB branch, the destroyed gunmen were involved in terrorist activities in the territory of the Russian Federation.
According to secret services, Jordanian citizen Farid Yusef Umeira, known among gunmen as Abu-Havs al-Urduni, orchestrated terrorist activities of foreign hirelings, local armed gangs and religious extremists. He also exercised control over distribution of financial and material resources, received from international terrorist and extremist structures.
“Abu-Havs was a successor of previous Al Qaeda envoys in the North Caucasus Khattab, Abu al-Valid and Abu-Umar who had been destroyed by FSB squads and who had been on the Wanted List of several foreign states,” the press service noted. It explained that the Jordanian had come to Russia to set up a ramified terrorist infrastructure, to step up and orchestrate terrorist activities of local armed gangs in the region as well as to recruit new mercenaries.
“According to reliable data, Abu-Havs arrived in Dagestan to engineer and commit large-scale terror acts so as to destabilize the situation in the republic,” emphasized the press service.
Foreign mercenary Abu Havs was the last close aide to the notorious terrorist Khattab.

Chechen Premier Ramzan Kadyrov commented today that the death of Abu-Khavs will much improve the situation in Chechnya:
“Today I was informed that the well known Arab terrorist Abu-Khavs, who for a long time has been one of the main emissaries of international terrorists in the North Caucasus region and for all practical purposes fully financed the terrorist organizations in the region, has been killed during a spetz-operation in Dagestan. I am convinced that the liquidation of Abu-Khavs will have a positive effect on the situation not only in Chechnya, but in all of the regions, in as much as he invested a large amount of money into carrying out terror attacks over the course of the last several years.”
