Perhaps you can enlighten us as to what is stopping anyone from getting into a good/"elite" school?Originally posted by the Bear:if you only knew what the heck went on

Does that stop any local from getting into a good school if they make the grades?Originally posted by av98m:Without being too specific:
1. quota of places reserved for foreigners like the chinese and vietnamese who are given free scholarships
2. minister/mps/grassroots leaders and those with similar connections can circumvent the system and get their kids in through the back door
These 2 groups will get their places first, the leftover is up for grabs.

It means that there are less available places..and that some of those who do not make the cut may well have better grades than the 2 groups mentioned.Originally posted by ProGovt:Does that stop any local from getting into a good school if they make the grades?
Although there are schools that gives privileges to children of alumni (whether they are elite or not), that system does not extend beyond primary education as secondary school entrance is purely performance based.Originally posted by av98m:It means that there are less available places..and that some of those who do not make the cut may well have better grades than the 2 groups mentioned.
The government wonders why we don't have enough entreprenuers while crushing those exisiting ones that we do have. Most, no matter how capable and resourceful, will find it hard to stand against the sheer power of the government machinery. Of course, overseas, where the playing field is more level, our government does less well e.g. NTUC's overseas ventures.Originally posted by the Bear:sunny...
remember the breakfast vans? the guy who came up with the idea went to get licenses for it.. the gabrament instead of giving it to him, opened up a tender and he was shafted... even when it was his idea...
there was a nice little shop at an interchange selling hot food to the hungry.. they were making a good little business.. the next thing that happened was NTUC opened up a shop next to it and ran it out of business...
keep digging... you'll find that we may have hard heads.. but it is not going to do anything against the juggernaut of the GLCs and stupidity...
... and I believe there are still people who got in without coming from elite background.Originally posted by the Bear:point: there was one year when RJC was taking in people with 4 points.. from 6 subjects...
