Unfortunately, those societies you deem to be unsuitable for the message of universal values like freedom and human rights belong in an increasingly small minority.Originally posted by oxford mushroom:And in a similar vein, so is the understanding of what constitutes human rights to groups such as Amnesty International. Their narrow perception of freedom and human rights is not suitable for all societies and is targeted carefully for a leftist audience.
Whilst big nations may have advantages of greater natural resources and abundant cheap labour, small nations like Singapore are easier to manage. That is an advantage we should exploit.Originally posted by LazerLordz:Anyway, Spinsugar brings up a valid point. Micromanagement is easy when you have a small population to legislator ratio.

The differences between those on the left and the right of the political divide will never be resolved and some might say, are absolutely necessary for a vibrant democracy. Obviously I stand to the right of you. Between freedom and prosperity, I choose prosperity. Rather than having the right to speak my mind, I would rather have the right to education, jobs and to live in safety without fear of crime. To me, the most important human right is not freeedom of speech, but happiness, prosperity and progress.
The government has brought Singapore 40 years of prosperity and progress. Despite a vocal opposing minority, the fact that the people of Singapore have chosen the same government in free elections all these years indicate that the majority are happy with it.
The Chinese government is just as authoritarian as ever, but it has lifted millions out of poverty (though many more still remain deeply impoverished). The Philippines has democracy for many years, but its citizens are no better economically.
Why does the Opposition not do better at the polls? Why is CSJ never successful with his talk about freedom of speech and democracy? Because they have missed the plot. To borrow the words of a successful politician, what matters MOST is not freedom of speech, IT'S THE ECONOMY, STUPID!
Those are essentials. However, there is a need for a balanced form of democracy as well.Originally posted by oxford mushroom:Whilst big nations may have advantages of greater natural resources and abundant cheap labour, small nations like Singapore are easier to manage. Now we can probably understand the reasons for a dearth of talent in Singapore, when an educated person will prefer to sacrifice the soul of idealism in exchange for material gains.

What majority are you talking about when more then half the population do not get to vote, and the incumbent ruling political party will unashamedly declare a "Walk-over" ?

Why does the Korean economy remained vibrant despite its liberal democracy and tolerance towards public demonstrations ?

Are you stupid, or simply blind to the way politics have been conducted in Singapore ?

Oxhead has opinions? You gotta be kidding, all he ever does is cut and paste news report, when confronted by forumners with superior logic, he just side track and beat around the bush. Frankly, he does not have any brains to think for himself, he just takes what the monarchy dish out to him and place it on a pedestal to worship. He thinks that since they are all smart elites, he is not equivalent to them in IQ, so he will take anything from them.Originally posted by Atobe:Has the learned mush-head from Oxford been floored by a chimpanzee and prefer to remain voiceless ?
What happened to the conceited and opinionated mush-head ?
