I think i went to Shanghai about the same time as you. I saw one Sitcom, it is in, I believe, Shanghainese.Originally posted by pinkish purple papayas:Dear, i would prefer in govt encouraging chinese language, but its banning dialects on media we are talking about. Isn't banning a bit extreme?
I went to shanghai 2yrs ago, yeah, china, communist and stuff... then i on the TV to watch their boring TV shows,
omg! i saw this drama show with chinese speaking in a language i think is shanghainese.. although dialects are not encouraged, they are certainly not banned.

Mandarin is China's offical dialect, but you can't expect everyone to speak purely Mandarin, right? Same thing in Singapore. Malay is the offical language, but we don't speak Malay eveyday one, right?
But them it's different. Singapore is so small. If you divide it further, what's left? Besides, we have to keep in mind of one problem that is in the way when we were just independent: Secret Society. Different secret society bond itself with it's own dialect, so banning dialect will undermine the secret society's bond.
China is BIG lor. They have a few dialect district (there are disputes, some say 7, some say 8, even got people say 12. So I only say "few"), these district have their unique dialect that differs greatly in grammar and pronouncation. Shanghai is in heart of the Wu dialect district, it's naturally that they have TV programs that are in their native dialect.
But I agree that it's high time to reconsider the ban.
u are not getting the point..but nvm..Originally posted by Cenarious:Meaning they know that some people cannot understand mandarin and english, and they dont want these people to get sars and run around doctor hopping because to be unable to understand both mandarin and english you must have been living under a rock your whole life.

furthermore, i think dialects will enhance the communities cohesiveness, at least there a common topic to speak and learn from.
p.s. i think no one plays secret society anymore, every play lan games nowadays. lol

Oh? Tell me your point.Originally posted by pinkish purple papayas:u are not getting the point..but nvm..
what is the purpose of doing that? why not let the newer generations learn the dialects as well?Originally posted by Cenarious:Oh? Tell me your point.
Because it's useless and it's gonna be too much for school.Originally posted by dragg:what is the purpose of doing that? why not let the newer generations learn the dialects as well?

Even though dialects are not banned in social situations it is not encouraged, and this idea is given to us by not allowing it on TV. This prevents people from getting over excited about dialects that it splits the chinese into clans and getting into clan rivalry.Originally posted by dragg:too much for school? i am not suggesting that dialects be included as a syllabus.
anyway how can any dialects or languages be useless? it is a communication tool.

You can always learn from your family or friends if you want.
And who are you gonna use it on? Even hongkong has started learning mandarin.
Well where were you planning to go then?Originally posted by dragg:never mind. from your argument i can see where you are going.
You can see people say people language, see ghost speak ghost language.Originally posted by rainee:i actually love mandarin even tho I cannot speak well in it. My vocab is very limited currently and when I speak I have a strange accentI love listening to Mandarin songs and would love to learn this language so that I can speak it fluently one day.
What I really hate is when people who can speak mandarin fluently started to "force" me to speak the language. I will usually try to speak a bit if I am in a fully Mandarin speaking group, but sumtimes of cos I will end up speaking more English cos like I said just now, my vocab is limited. I have experienced this with my frens before, where they will just make me feel embarassed by forcing me to speak Mandarin in full with them. And when I switched to English all of them will just turn away and start to ignore me.
It is partly because of this that I have grown apart from my secondary school frens.![]()
Sun Yat Sen is actually born into a hakka family in Canton. He is not cantonese by ethnicity.Originally posted by pinkish purple papayas:Well, the founding father of China, Mr Sun Yat Sun was a cantonese. Much of the chinese diaspora overseas were rich and were cantonese too. they were much involved in donations and war efforts.
Definately cantonese was taken into consideration. But at last mandarin won over because mandarin was the "guan hua" in Beijing up north.
Cantonese is known as "yue" language. Many eras ago, GuangDong, GuanXi and Vietnam was an independent kingdom, the "Yue" State.
Han Chinese came and conquered these lands, subsequently, through much sinicsation. Thats why cantonese is known as "yue yu" and vietnam is known as "yue nan". If u were to disect and observe this 2 languages, cantonese and vietnamese, u will find similarities. like chinese and japanese.
Cold ironyOriginally posted by LazerLordz:Just a bit of trivia..
The rebellion against the Qing Dynasty was planned, organized and directed from Singapore. The Sun Yat Sen Villa at Balestier Road, currently preserved, was the residence of Dr Sun, and was where he did all the groundwork for the founding of the Republic.
If anyone has more info, please add on. This is what I know.
