NO ONE HELPS WOMAN WHO IS ATTACKED
DO NOTHING: One person films the attack, other gawk
SEE NOTHING: One woman walks past, flicks hair & rushes off
By Andre Yeo
December 16, 2006
THE passer-by could have used his or her handphone to call the police.
Instead, it looks like the person used it to film a horrific attack on a woman on a Bukit Batok street.
It was then posted on a website for all to see.
For two minutes, this is what that person saw.
A woman walking alone is suddenly stabbed by a man with a sharp object.
Even when she fell to the ground face down, he continued to stab her, covering her with blood and ignoring her screams of 'bu yao, bu yao' (don't want in Mandarin).
He hit her with such force, she was thrown back several times, but she clung to his shirt in the hope of preventing more injury.
All this time, the passer-by must have continued filming, unmoved by the bloody scene that was unfolding.
Perhaps, the person was filming it as evidence to pass on to the police.
But police spokesman Cheryl Foo told The New Paper that they did not receive any video footage of the attack.
So it seems likely that a claim to fame overrode a sense of duty.
The video apparently shows China national Zhu Jinfeng, 26, stabbing Miss Lou Yanwa, 24, also from China.
The pair were friends.
The attack happened at 7.20am on 24 Aug near Block 146, Bukit Batok West Avenue 6.
Miss Lou survived.
Zhu was convicted on 9 Nov and sentenced to eight months' jail and given four strokes of the cane.
Besides the 'film-maker', a few other passers-by also did nothing.
The video shows that for several seconds, as the vicious attack was taking place at a busy intersection, some people and motorists stopped to gawk. But they did nothing else.
The video clearly showed a man dressed in a white shirt watching the action as if it were a TV drama.
He even took several steps forward to get a better look but did nothing else.
He stayed to watch the entire attack from start to end.
CAR STOPPED
The driver of a gold-coloured car stopped to gawk before driving off.
The video showed a truck driving by slowly without stopping. A woman is seen walking past the victim before flicking her hair and rushing off.
It was only when a man dressed in a blue shirt grabbed a motorcycle helmet and intervened that the attack stopped.
The man in the blue shirt turned out to be Mr Peh Hay Leng, 55. He came to the woman's rescue when he spotted another passer-by with a helmet.
He grabbed the helmet and lashed out repeatedly at Zhu, forcing the attacker to drop his knife.
The helmet owner, after realising what had happened, jumped in to restrain Zhu.
Netizens expressed shock and disbelief at the audacity of the man's assault.
'Unbelievable' and 'shocking' were some of the comments posted online.
Freelance writer Lai Ee Na, who is in her late 30s, was disturbed when she saw the clip and called The New Paper.
She said: 'I was so affected. He (the attacker) just went on and on and on (stabbing her). It was nauseating. Why did he not show any remorse or fear?'
She said she understood why most of the people who walked past did not help the victim.
Said Ms Lai: 'If you had been there, any human being would have been stunned. On hindsight, we would say we should have helped her.
'But the guy had a knife in his hand. How do you expect people to stop a man who has a knife?'
But she did admit that she was wondering whether anyone would come to the woman's rescue.
And when the two good Samaritans rushed forward, she was relieved.
Said Ms Lai: 'I thought, 'Finally, someone had the guts to help her.' '
Project manager Jessica Oh, 29, was stunned with the way the female passer-by just flicked her hair before walking off, despite witnessing the violence before her.
She said: 'It's not civic-minded at all. The least she could have done was to call for help.
'But she did not even look shocked or scared.
'They all looked as if they were staying to watch a show.'
Ms Oh felt that more could have been done to help the victim.
She said: 'If I were in her shoes, I would be worried about whether anyone would help me.'

Your reason for voting is for the improvement in the lives of the people or because of one person?Originally posted by Skibi:ShutterBug, people like you are the sole reason why i vote for PAP and even volunteer to do work for them. You can say so for yourself, but you sound too cocksure for people whom you think you knew.Originally posted by Skibi:Let me tell you one thing, anyone in the young PAP would have stepped forward and stopped the guy regardless of the danger. You can actually laugh at him being the beast he is.
Since bestiality got the best of him when he lets nature take its way to shield himself from aliens.
Yea, he let himself become an animal he is. Natural, territorial and stupid.
You're still naive and ignorant.Originally posted by Skibi:Don't call others stupid when you are worse.

the kallang murdurer is no saint himself. he is way too old to be gullible. on top of that, how can you be so sure it was the guy who got manipulated?Originally posted by ShutterBug:I also reference the Kallang murder, in which a stupid local got manipulated, used, and dumped y a China national.
They can drive anyone of any national to the point of murdering them!
How many murder and stabbings related to China nationals have you read so far over the past farking 5 years????
knn!!Originally posted by ditzy:Nonono, I was just saying something that sort of looked good with your quote.![]()
Those who stand there and gawk without even bothering to call police or at least an ambulance have commited depraved indifference. I can understand why some passerbys would hesitate to help her because they are worried for their safety . However statements such as yours are unwarranted. If you can mock her situation in the forum , in my opinion- you are equally depraved as her killer.Originally posted by ShutterBug:I also reference the Kallang murder, in which a stupid local got manipulated, used, and dumped y a China national.
