ST special report - middle-aged and out of a job

one of them is out of job for the past 12 yrs!!!
he went for lots of interviews. one of them asked him, "you're a former GM, sure you want this kind of salary?" or: "if you work here, no more jobs left for me."
"give me a 1600 job and i will come. but i still cant find a job. am i not a willing worker?"
in the 3rd quarter of this year, graduates aged 40-49 recorded the lowest re-employment rate of 66.3% within 6 mths of retrenchment. 88.4% for diploma holders and 77.2% for those with below-secondary qualification.
1 in 2 of those unemployed are 40 and above. 14% have at least a diploma.
today, around 8100 or 2.5% of all PMETs aged 40 to 55, are still jobless.
although the number has dropped, it is not because things are looking up for jobless middle managers. rather. it is that many have taken stopgap work in desperation. many have joined the swelling ranks of management consultants without clients, or become taxi drivers, brokers, financial advisers etc. -
i wonder how many in desperation end up in MLMs?

if you are near 40 you have cause to be worried when the next round of economic downturn comes.

Best assurance is to be self-employed before you're over 40.
Even if you're over 40 - find a way to do business... legit ones that is.... -
I remebered there is another article that a male Sporean decided to move to Canada n there working as an aircraft refiller after seeing his sibling
got laid off. It also stated immigration agency stated the no of Sporean aged thirty n above had applied to move to Australia after they claimed they worried when they reached 40. -

average male graduates after NS: 25 yrs
works till 40 gets retrenched or made redundant for various reasons:
gahment say can retire only around 65 yrs old.
summary: productive years of an average SG male: 15 yrs of employment
versus 25 years of redundancy.
just my simplistic view of what awaits the average Sg male. too general and simplistic perhaps. but lets hope none of us fall into this category. -

Remember that self employment needs preparation. There's a lot of red tapes and GLCs that takes away the competition and providing more jobs for the taxable PR wannabes and Foreign Talents.

What's more, having more qualifications don't help. A few in the article stated they have used up quite a bit of their savings on studying and improving themselves, and at the job interview, all they get is "You are over-qualified".
On the other hand, not improving oneself means not knowing how the corporate world has changed.
We are just stuck and might end up nowhere. -

Spore PR from other countries live here, he can leave Spore.
I have several colleauges from Malaysia n Indonesia. I asked them got any plan to settle in Spore permanently, they said no cause they planned to get PR only cause of the CPF contribution. U can imagine how much they can get if they worked here for a couple of years. -
