nobody is asking the govt to ban foreign workers.Originally posted by oxford mushroom:If foreigners can pick up the skill in a couple of months and do the job as well, you have to show your boss why you deserve a higher salary. This story just goes to show that we have to constantly upgrade our skills. Foreign workers may know nuts when they first started, not because they are dumb but because they lack the training opportunities available in Singapore.
Knowing well that you are training these foreign workers to take over your job, you should be undergoing trainng yourself to take over your supervisor's job. The other point in this story is that it is not just about salary. The writer admitted that foreign workers are willing to work much longer hours. If you are not able to do more and still insist on working shorter hours, employers will go for foreigners. If the government bans all foreign workers, employers will move their businesses elsewhere and Singaporeans will lose more.
I am sure the ministers can train those banglas on everything they know, in no time, those banglas can replace our ministers, like those that replace this Singaporean. Even technical skills can be taught, what more about ministers job.Originally posted by dragg:nobody is asking the govt to ban foreign workers.
the govt can limit them to certain sectors and control the numbers as well. it seems like it is now a free-for-all.
the way you put it i believe majority of singaporeans will soon be out of job.
i am sure there are foreigners who can be ministers and yet willing to take a pay lower than 100k a month.
why dont the ministers outsource themselves?

It's a real Gourmet Recipe! One that only our PAP can dream up!Originally posted by Mid9Sun:The article is written by an ITE chap trained in IT who just got laid off.
The main jeez is that the bosses hired FTs who knows nothing and once the singaporean trained these FTs, these singaporeans will be retrenched because they cannot compete with the FTs in terms of salary as well as working hrs.
He complaint that why the govt on 1 hand encourage ppl to retrain and upgrade skills on the other encourage and give out permits for FTs.
So there......
You might as well tell the gov to screw their suggestion of locals having more time with their families!!!Originally posted by oxford mushroom:If foreigners can pick up the skill in a couple of months and do the job as well, you have to show your boss why you deserve a higher salary. Of course keeping costs down is important to a business. They are not charities after all. But likewise, businesses are not daft. If a local can contribute more to the business financially despite his higher pay, he is still valued.Originally posted by BillyBong:Once again, you speak in tangent to the crux of the issue.
Just because a FT can learn faster and produce better for a lower pay doesn't automatically imply that locals already hired have instantly become redundant.
This thread is talking about locals who are asked to train new FTs in their workscope and are then unceremoniously dumped because of a wage variance that the company cannot 'afford'. You must be naive to think employers would 'inform' a surbordinate that they are to train FTs for the purpose of being replaced.
If anyone knew that, they would have refused immediately.
So what if an FT can work for longer hours? Since when did longer hours = better worker? If the employee can meet the standards and provide value-add in a shorter time, does that not make him/her a more valued asset? Why waste the OT pay on a worker who completes the task in X+5hr if the local can finish the task in Xhr?
No, the underlying factor to chop workers is WAGE COST and WAGE COST ALONE.
Agree with you in a way. There are those who would say that you should not train the new foreign worker then. If that happens, it will create a new industry: companies that provide training for foreign workers. The local worker who is a quick entrepreneur will find that he will not only have a job but a better one.Originally posted by fymk:Moral of the story: Never make yourself so expandable that flicking you off will not affect the team.
If you have to learn the hard way , why make it easy for others to pick it up.
If you want to teach, be a teacher and get paid for it.
