Why isnt there any yellow or black skin australians protesting against the Lebanese? Are they afraid that they will be beaten up like the middle eastern?Originally posted by fymk:Australian history is similar to American history. Go find out why.
Oh no not a cronulla example again ...anyways my friend's family is asian and living in Cronulla at that time and am still living there - they did not encounter problems during the riots.
Yes you have some neo nazis out there somewhere in the wide wide world. So what?
Why should anyone protest against any one on the basis of race?Originally posted by Gazelle:Why isnt there any yellow or black skin australians protesting against the Lebanese? Are they afraid that they will be beaten up like the middle eastern?
Is the white australian policy created by white man, targeting at the non white?Originally posted by fymk:Why should anyone protest against any one on the basis of race?
I do not understand your question.
Middle easterns have their problems
The only time when the chinese community did something was to protest against the White Australia policy which was abolished later.
isn't the name self-explanatory enough?Originally posted by Gazelle:Is the white australian policy created by white man, targeting at the non white?
If you do not hold citizenship of Australia - you cannot call yourself aussie or australianOriginally posted by Gazelle:Am I right to say that as an immigrant, you can only call yourself an Australian and not an Aussie?
Almost the same as the bumiputra policy which was the fundamental reason for the split of Singapore from Malaysia except in Australia's history, the whites are colonialists not natives.Originally posted by Gazelle:Is the white australian policy created by white man, targeting at the non white?
Calling yourself aussie doesnt mean you are being recognized as one. what a shame isnt it?Originally posted by fymk:If you do not hold citizenship of Australia - you cannot call yourself aussie or australian
If you hold citizenship - australian or aussie is fine....got an australian born chinese friend who refers to himself aussie all the time. Never saw the caucasians correcting him at all .
There is a big difference between a policy that protects the native than a policy that protect their skin colors in a foreign land.Originally posted by fymk:Almost the same as the bumiputra policy which was the fundamental reason for the split of Singapore from Malaysia except in Australia's history, the whites are colonialists not natives.
White Australia Policy was effectively overturned in 1973 by amendments to the immigration legislation to end racial aspects . In 1975 the Racial Discrimination Act made the use of racial criteria for any official purpose illegal. In 1978, review of immigration law in 1978 that all selection of prospective migrants based on country of origin was entirely removed from official immigration policy. In 1982 , preference to british subjects are removed.
So what problem do you have with an abolished policy , Gazelle?
Before you say anything else, there are already 2 chinese senators who sat or am sitting in the Australian Federal Parliament Upper House. And there are a few MPs of chinese descent who sat or are currently sitting in the lower house of the federal parliament.
I suspect that you speak with too much american slang.Originally posted by vito_corleone:isn't the name self-explanatory enough?![]()

Gazelle, you can also choose to remain in denial about SingaporeÂ’s historical past too. Did 1964Â’s racial riot not exist? In total, the violence killed 36 people and injured another 556. About 3,000 people were arrested. In response to 1964, Singapore implemented policies that made racial discrimination and riots punishable by law including enforcing the ISA.Originally posted by Gazelle:There is a big difference between a policy that protects the native than a policy that protect their skin colors in a foreign land.
Do you actually believe that a change in government policy will immediately change the mindset of the people who strongly believe in and supported that policy? Or you prefer to live in denial?
Perhaps you prefer acts of racism from a fellow Singaporean? And what is your issue with Australians? Are you a racist? If not, why white Australians? Why not include Singaporeans, Nazis, Iraqis, Americans, Malaysians, Thai, Eskimos too? Just what is your problem with Australia?Originally posted by Gazelle:The only difference is that some Singaporeans dont mind racism remarks in a foreign land as long it is coming from a white man.

In a multicultural context, Aussie is used by some in Australia as a specific term for Australians of the 'traditional' majority cultural group, that is, "Aussies" is sometimes understood to denote 'Anglo-Celtic' Australians. A parallel can be drawn between the usage of "Aussie" in Australia and Boer in South Africa, both referring to the descendants of early settlers, as opposed to later immigrants. Sometimes this can be interpreted as excluding Australians of a Mediterranean, Asian or Middle Eastern cultural background. The usage of "Aussie" in this context is regarded as offensive by some, as it can denote that some cultural groups are not equally Australian. It may also be used in a derogatory sense by those who do not consider themselves Australian to label those who do. While attempts by schools, politicians and the media to use the term as an all encompassing label for those with Australian citizenship, it has continued to retain common usage as an ethnic descriptor, especially among youth. The terminology received international attention as a result of the 2005 Cronulla riots [1], where tattoos, t-shirts and scrawlings on the beach reading "100% Aussie Pride" were largely seen as a display of ethnic identification.

Though Singapore now is at peace, we must know that underneath this seemingly calm surface, there are under-currents too. We must not deny this, but instead act on it to prevent a repeat of the 1964Â’s incident.
I hope this answer your senseless question of whether a change in government policy will immediately change the mindset of the people who strongly believe in and supported that policy. Of course nothing is immediate! People takes time to change, but a change is better than no change at all my dear friend!
Perhaps under you, GazelleÂ’s governance, nothing would have been done and you will still pretend that the world is a beautiful and lovely place while your citizens are suffering away.
Please stop your senseless questioning. You are making a fool of yourself.

Initially born out of anti-Chinese racism during the gold rush, the Royal Commission appointed by Governor Hotham, on the 16 November, and labour union protests of the 1880's, the key legislative enactment of the White Australia Policy was the Immigration Restriction Act of 1901. Discriminatory immigration policies were gradually removed between the end of World War II and 1982 with racially discriminatory aspects of the Migration Act officially overturned in 1973.Originally posted by Gazelle:Do you understand why they call it WHITE Australia Policy, and not just Australia Policy?

In contemporary Australian public and academic discourses, the term 'White Australia Policy' is commonly used to refer to the conception of Australia in ethno-nationalistic terms.

Hello, it was named way before I was born... it even ended before I was born so how was I to know? I suggest you ask your grandfather about it. Maybe they may know why it is White and not Maroon, Pink, Navy blue...Originally posted by Gazelle:Why is it WHITE?
The effective end of the White Australia policy is usually dated to 1973, when the Whitlam Labor government implemented a series of amendments preventing the enforcement of racial aspects of the immigration law. These amendments legislated that: blah blah blah...Originally posted by Gazelle:Why is it WHITE?
