Let me give you a concrete example.
Years ago, each villager's family had big, shabby house with a great view and a cool breeze.
Then the guests arrived and the elders ordered the construction of the Visitor's Lodge.
The houses became smaller and smaller, and was filled with all sorts of cheap, entertaining trinklets. In time, each family had a tiny apartment packed together with thousands of other families. They see the accomplishments of the elders tower over them.
The space was gone, the breeze was replaced by industrial smog and there wasn't any view really. But they had their trinkets.
The elders said that their lives were getting better. The villagers completely agreed. -

Villager: You are right. I can only blame myself for misplacing things.
In time nobody tells anyone about anything, because nobody has a perfect memory and only the elders have great books. -
then what about the villagers who could not stand it aly longer and chose to leave the village?

With no way to replace the Elders, the villagers can only forget and completely believe in what the Elders offers.
Despite constantly knowing that something is missing, the villagers speak nothing of it. Happy with the gifts that the guest offered, the Village accepts and welcome the guest and invited for more. -

It has no relevance to our country at all, because in the story the villagers have lost something they can't remember, whereas in Singapore we just gained a few million more sq feet of Mega Shopping Malls. -
