NSF is too damn bloody LONG liao!
All those kind of crap training that can be finished in 1 to 1 & half years took away our 2 & half years. It's a waste of time and our youth serving for this country that doesn't care about us. The government is like an money-generating enterprise. Costs keeping increasing and nothing decreases except our pay!!! -

I think the govt is just exploiting nsf for its own benefit.
I mean if all those training during ns is relevent to defending our land its perfectly acceptable. But the truth is that most of the time is spent doing "sai kang" like preparing for NDP(all those involved b4 would noe),crowd control/cleaning up during new year/christmas celebration, wearing stupid animal costumes to entertain the public on some saf canivals etc...All these is so fucking degrading to nsf n u call this serving our nation.
I really dun mind being put through tougher trainings(btw i was in a combat unit) to forgo all this shit. But it seems like nsf r just being treated like cheap labour by our govt... -

While i agree that NS is our duty, i still feel its not unreasonable or disloyal to ask that more be done to make it less of a burden and more meaningful.
Quite a bit of my NS life was spent sitting about, doing nothing, waiting, or doing admin stuff with no relation to combat readiness.
If you look around today you will see lots of foreigners around taking away oppurunities from singaporeans....taking jobs, places in schools/unis, and lots more.
I don't really have anything personal against these foreigners, after all, its their right to seek oppurunites wherever they are, but doesn't anybody feel cheesed off that we are expected to fight and die for a country that can't even garuantee us a job / education over the 'outsiders' ?
Yeah, i know this is no excuse not to do NS, but like i said, its not unreasonable for us to ask that the gov/SAF look into ways to allow us to learn what we need to and leave in as short a period as possible...... -

Does the words Duty, Honour, Country mean anything? But I must admit 2 1/2 yrs is too long a time. Should be cut down to 2 yrs max. Anyway for the guys that have served, wasn't it an experience? Got to know lots of friends & pple during NS some were good, Bad, lazy or plain Gung-ho. Hey and some of my friends from NS become buddies and I found out sometimes they are more relaiable then the people that I made from civilian life. lolz

Are you 1st generation PR, foreigner, SAF regular or downgraded from some lobo unit? School & unit training are ALL be finished within 1.5 yrs. They keep you for SO LONG is to save cost in events like NDP. By the way, do you know what happens inside or you just want to rebutt me for the sake of that?? Eh.... wat kind of a deterence forces is SAF ... if the enemy believes that all its current standing forces are merely trainnee soldiers??/
True... the training can be completed earlier... but... being trained and being really trained and skilled in the art of war... is a different matter....
By being part of the ORBAT daily... even if you are resting in a bunk ... you serve the nation in deterring enemy.. cos the enemies knows.. as long as there are troops in the bunk... they can suit up, armed, load up and move out.... to challenge unwelcomed visitors....
in fact... wat do you think our enemy's regular units do everyday? do you really think they trained everyday?? i know that they everyday like our NSF... must eat, shit, sleep and grouse.... but... do you think they everyday train and train and train?? i mean.... how many things are there to be trained in?? eventually... they regular units also sleep in their bunk most of the time... if not conducting some patrol... -

And the government doesnt even care if people has strong objections to certain changes (eg fare hike, CPF, parking fees, night ERP, GST, etc etc) They are just too high and mighty to reverse these changes, perhaps afraid to leave the impression that they are not decisive enuff or afraid to lose authority. So how can anyone not feel short-changed? Singaporeans are 2nd class citizens in their own country, migrate oso 2nd class. It's easy for girls to say 2 yrs NS is nothing, but it does matter to some people. When girls (or foreigners) from your same year are already working around 2~3 years, drawing better pay, and you are just coming out searching for a job, you'd notice the difference. They may end up being your superior, how would u feel about this?
As for cheap labour, they are so cheap-skate that they recalled my friend (already ORD-ed liao) on SEVERAL sundays to help out on the NDP set up. Sunday no work, so no need to pay you lor. Easy as that. How's that for cheap labour? -
Well if u pple think that u are 2nd class citzens what's the point of staying then, guys tend to lose out to gals in the begining but don't u get a higher starting pay. Nothing in this world is garunetted.... where got such thing? Even if u buy a product seldom got life time garunette.. got to work for it man. Well personally would u rather have some other countries rule us.. Malaysia, Indon or china? Look where the country are now? Or maybe u guys like to be ruled by UK or USA.. got pension scheme so got free money good rite.but u guys never look at the bad side of things .lolz I'm not really Pro-PAP they got some good things going and there are bad things too but no one's perfect. But look at some of the opposition candidates.. Dr Chee Soon Juan geeezsh what a character !! Think he will make a good PM? Beside Mr Chaim and Mr Low don't see any other good ones around. Coming back to NSF hey NDP who do u think besides Mindef got the capaibility to organise it?don't think any private company go the power to pull so many strings. Well the Problem now is that spore is too small and is now too saturated in almost every industry don't u think? Govt planning wasn't really good should have saw the recession years coming, But at least NS wasn't that bad.. less worries then don't u think? mon-sat in camp, book out chiong.. or work part-time then book in again. kiannia not like now must worry abt so many bills and savings.. But ain't complain and there is no use complaining.. Chin up.. always think of a better tomorrow.

Do you mean that no REAL training can be completed without going through 2 and a half years? Do you mean that after NS is shorten to 1.5 years, all the operational ready personnels are merely trainee soldiers incapable of defending the country?
Resting in the bunk can also serve as a deterence? That's what my officer told me too. Maybe that's why he sign-on.
If the government really like to hire cheap personnel to sleep in their barracks, they might as well hire and train those bangalahs since the government FAVOURED foreign TALENTS so much... and it also makes our SAF more competitive.
The soldiers from other countries are regulars. So they choose the life they want. I know that our country's population is small. I'm not asking to discard NS. Just to shorten the period so that we can go out and contribute more to the economy. Anyway User Name, I have no objections about a female being my superior but I do beilieve the govt can control the whole private sector pay scale. Don't u see that there are so many govt agencies undergoing "re-structuring" now esp in these dark times? What they do is that they re-trench workers and re-employing them at a different pay scale. Besides u can't blame employers the Singaporean mentality esp the chinese always wants to go for cheap labours.
I used to come from a combat unit and was involved one of the NDP parades although my friends and I always bitch about the reharsals but to me personally it beats outfield excercises anytime. I do beileve that I will always be welcome back into the army if u enquire the pay in the combat forces these days are now quite comparable to maket rates. But I'm getting a better rate outside and there is no need for me to be on call 24-7 why should I go back . lolz Everyone wants to turn back time don't u think...... -

Another common misconception is that ORD-ed guys will get slightly higher pay. You have to realise that this is not true all the time (should I say MOST of the time, it isnt true).
As for NDP 'cheap labour', I've said it - it's ok if you are in NSF, what if you're not?
Also, alot of NSF/Men I know get some kindof injury- some more serious than others. Alot of people have backaches, hearing problems, leg injuries, etc etc...
To be fair, it is true that NSMen get some rebates for INCOME TAX, and also abit more of that New Singapore Share, but this is just a small amount of money. Remember the days when you get $200 for a full month of 'cheap labour' during NSF? Ok lar... I agree better than nothing.
