I'm afraid your suggestion will be deemed too troublesome and labor intensive for our gov to even toy with this consideration.Originally posted by maggot:Poor people with irregular CPF contributions or no CPF contributions.
These group of people could be on contract jobs or jobless and are struggling to survive.
From the CPF contributions, their poor incomes are known.
Since CPF have these figures so can they help to identify those who are having problems with their incomes and help them to lesser the wide income gap in whatever ways possible?![]()
This way to find people with income difficulties will be one of the fastest.Originally posted by ShutterBug:I'm afraid your suggestion will be deemed too troublesome and labor intensive for our gov to even toy with this consideration.
They'd rather focus their scholarly wisdom and knowledge on broadening their revenues and further strengthening the economy, so that they can realize more progress in their salaries.
This is the hard cold facts - which of course they WILL NEVER admit.
They SAY that they will NARROW income gaps; but that's by far just still a spoken intention not yet transformed into any actions.Originally posted by maggot:This way to find people with income difficulties will be one of the fastest.
I keep hearing they will narrow the widening income gap so I find this way to be the most simple way of locating who is in need rather than using people to slowly find them
Most of them don't have internet or even don't understand simple english...or even don't know where to start...

how true is that? it sound like being a poor is more difficult than to get rich.
give the govt a break. i think they are trying hard to narrow the income gap. but i hope they try to narrow their minister and top govt official salary with our fellow neighbouring country which they has been trying to tell us to compete with. that is one things by far globalisation theory dont apply to in singapore.

There will always be an income divide. The way to narrow the income gap is to increase the productivity of low income earners. But they must be willing to help themselves.Originally posted by ShutterBug:They SAY that they will NARROW income gaps; but that's by far just still a spoken intention not yet transformed into any actions.
And do we really know their term of the word NARROWING? Personally, it looks to me that they're waiting for these low income earners and the downright poor, to die off in the ever racing economy they've been stoking with ever increasing taxes, costs, and now GST.
Yes, it is easy for them to identify people with income difficulties, and the dog-life poor.... they are just afraid to lose money helping any more than they are at the present.
I try to see agreeable views in each and every one of your postings, and yes, with regards to income divides, they do exist in every country and indeed people ought to help themselves in ways that they know how, and that they financially can.Originally posted by oxford mushroom:There will always be an income divide. Wafer fabs are willing to train Singaporeans to do the job but Singaporeans are not hungry enough to take them. They avoid shift work and do not want to wear protective clothing and work in a clean room Whose fault is it?

If Singapore can dictate the direction of the economy we won't have to worry about jobs and incomeOriginally posted by ShutterBug:And I am sure, there are reasons why people aren't able to take up jobs in wafer fabs, and if you ask me whose fault it is, I'd still say its the gov's fault for creating a local employment market and an economy that's tailored only to the highly educated and skilled and forgetting that the population of SIngapore aren't comprised of PERFECT people, like your good self.
This isn't about market trends, this is about how our gov neglected the means of peoples livelihoods.Originally posted by oxford mushroom:If Singapore can dictate the direction of the economy we won't have to worry about jobs and income![]()
Don't you realize how small Singapore is and how vulnerable we are to the movers and shakers of the global market? If the USA has a sneeze, we immediately get a cold. China is now a far bigger player in the global market than we are.
Wake up! We cannot control market trends...we can only look for opportunities in the waves created by others and try to be swept forward and not drown.

I disagree. You can put your in the sand but that will not stop the progress of globalisation.Originally posted by ShutterBug:This isn't about market trends, this is about how our gov neglected the means of peoples livelihoods.
It is preceisely the smallness of our population that locals are being swept UNDER by the huge influx of foreigners from China due to our gov's ill-concieved FT Policy.

i don't agree with that. the fact that the pm of singapore earns many times more than that of us president of around 300k per annum simply doesnt fall through the debate. unless you can tell me the responsibilities of a sg pm outweighs that of the us president and hence justifying his huge paycheck?Originally posted by oxford mushroom:Because Singaporeans cannot handle transparency...they prefer the low salaries of a Suharto or Marcos.
tis not Singaporeans cannot handle transparency... tis that they are denied any opportunities to wish Suharto's or Marcos' long life, good health n prosperity in perpetualty...Originally posted by oxford mushroom:Because Singaporeans cannot handle transparency...they prefer the low salaries of a Suharto or Marcos.

The latest challenge to our economy is Vietnam and they are a bigger threat than China. Vietnamese draughtsmen are being employed to prepare architectural plans for Australian architecture companies. They are moving up the economic food chain very rapidly. We will see greater competition for our middle and upper management jobs from Vietnam very soon. The Vietnamese may not even need to come to Singapore...we will lose our jobs to them as businesses move their operations there.
Cheap Chinese foreign workers have lowered salaries for our low income workers but I do not think they will go much further. Right now, the bigger risk will be our middle level jobs. Vietnamese young people are learning English and taking degrees in management and technology. Intel has moved its manufacturing operations to Ho Chi Min City. They are young, ambitious, hungry, keen to learn and willing to work for less.
MM is right to say that you cannot freeze time. If you stick your head in the sand, you will be eaten up in no time.
It's not the responsibility, it's the quality of the politicians. US Chief Justice was lamenting that US judges are less qualified and not as clever as the lawyers who stand before them in court. Why? Because Congress dare not pay market prices for public officials in fear of people like you. In the end, the best and brightest end up corporate and top defense lawyers in the private sector. If you are OJ Simpson and can afford 4 million USD, you can get away with murder using a dream team of lawyers that include the youngest professor of law in Harvard University. The judge in the case would not even earn as much of one of the defense team's interns.Originally posted by thousandisland:i don't agree with that. the fact that the pm of singapore earns many times more than that of us president of around 300k per annum simply doesnt fall through the debate. unless you can tell me the responsibilities of a sg pm outweighs that of the us president and hence justifying his huge paycheck?

You are telling people that justice isn't always fair as money can buy justice. However in limited resources Singapore, we don't have that kind of money to keep up with the rest of the world.Originally posted by oxford mushroom:It's not the responsibility, it's the quality of the politicians.
