If Singaporeans have no soul, why are you on this forum?
I just feel so lucky to be born in Singapore - a place with equal opportunities for all including foreignerhttp://singaporemind.blogspot.com/
The non-elite are lucky. If you read 20th century history you will realize that the regular folk of another country suffer terribly under the rule of a tyrannical leadership. People dying by the thousands.Originally posted by justcooler:We are indeed very luckly
0.1% of the elite controling 99.9% of the population.
The 99.9% of the population only have to say YES (never say NO). Don't even have to think and crack our brains. very luckly indeed
Death itself is nothin' ... it's when u cant die n to suffer for the heck of it (having to end life prematurely in a lucky country)... maybe people go the mrt track way to raise the issue they dont wanna to just die in a luckless circumstance... of course the elite r happy, they can tell people to get out of their uncaring faces n have the social workers' pays looked into after a decade of their elitists' own increases...how lucky can u get anywhere else?...Originally posted by Cystaire:The non-elite are lucky. The elite are also lucky. Some of our fellow Asian countries have regular folk who are willing to fight their own government to the death - they rather all die than to let their leaders win. In Singapore our elite just has to manage an overwhelmingly obedient people who complain a little now and then.
I find his blog amusing. Of course Singaporeans are lucky . I am still waiting for my 15 million dollar powerball win nowOriginally posted by kilua:This guys thinks we are very lucky to be Singaporeans too.
His name is Lucky Tan

Well, everyday I look at all those handicapped people on the streets and I think how fortunate I am, but when compared to rich people, I feel miserable.Originally posted by Cystaire:The non-elite are lucky. Powerball? Doesn't sound very Singaporean.Originally posted by fymk:I find his blog amusing. Of course Singaporeans are lucky . I am still waiting for my 15 million dollar powerball win now![]()
You are right. I used to compare myself with people better off than me.Originally posted by maurizio13:Well, everyday I look at all those handicapped people on the streets and I think how fortunate I am, but when compared to rich people, I feel miserable.
You are the person who compares himself/herself to a handicapped person and feel great about yourself! You find solace in people who are worse off than you!
There is a saying in Chinese, "water flows downwards, whereas humans climb upwards".
You compared us to other Asian countries, but then again, we aren't those countries; the demographics of a country is an important element in determining it's stability.
Who is to say that if we had stayed on with the British colonial system, we might have evolved to a much better democratic system and economy. Look at Hong Kong, a country with almost the same economic constraints like Singapore.
Singaporean overseas mahOriginally posted by Cystaire:Powerball? Doesn't sound very Singaporean.
Ermmm....Originally posted by Meat Pao:I indeed think Singapore is very lucky.
Just pay attention next time, when you step outside of Singapore, to JB or Batam, compare them to Singapore.
There is no reason why JB and Batam have such a difference to Singapore, if it is not due to Singapore management.
You walk through JB....then go Singapore.....or you take a ferry from Batam....to Singapore....see the difference....
If the boundaries are not artificially drawn, if Singapore is not separate and unique on its own, there is no reason why Singapore would not look just like JB or Batam.
Just from this comparison, it is a prove that Singapore is very lucky.
Meat Pao.
Why dont you compare with Taiwan or Hong Kong or Macau? Almost all the Chinese populated countries have grown strongly in the last 2 decades. Does the growth of Singapore comes from merely good management? Or does other factors come into play?Originally posted by Meat Pao:I indeed think Singapore is very lucky.

As I was saying, Hong Kong isn't a whole order of magnitude better, only slightly better in some ways and not so great in others (recall their SARS emergency management).Originally posted by maurizio13:Ermmm....
Why not compare with Hong Kong, which has a colonial past like ours?
Are we much better off than them?
Johor Bahru and Batam is different, the demographics is different.
If you want to, you might as well compare ourselves to Ethiopia, Somalia, etc.
We should compare ourselves with similar countries.
But if we compare with the SEA countries, Hong Kong, Taiwan are lucky too. To say Singapore is the luckiest is quite subjectiveOriginally posted by Cystaire:As I was saying, Hong Kong isn't a whole order of magnitude better, only slightly better in some ways and not so great in others (recall their SARS emergency management).
In contrast, we are in fact several orders of magnitude better than some of our regional neighbours.
Take for example Cambodia, where more than a million people perished under Pol Pot rule. It saddens me and boggles my mind how the leadership of a country can be so vicious to their own citizens.
As for your comment about "similar" countries, you already mentioned that every nation has unique demographics. So to what extent can we find a similar enough country to compare with?
We are lucky enough.
When SARs first struck, they were at the forefront, because of their close proximity, it was not possible to control it swiftly. If the point of outbreak is in Singapore, I am sure the results would have been similar.Originally posted by Cystaire:As I was saying, Hong Kong isn't a whole order of magnitude better, only slightly better in some ways and not so great in others (recall their SARS emergency management).
