Just pay attention next time, when you step outside of Singapore, to JB or Batam, compare them to Singapore.
There is no reason why JB and Batam have such a difference to Singapore, if it is not due to Singapore management.
You walk through JB....then go Singapore.....or you take a ferry from Batam....to Singapore....see the difference....
If the boundaries are not artificially drawn, if Singapore is not separate and unique on its own, there is no reason why Singapore would not look just like JB or Batam.
Just from this comparison, it is a prove that Singapore is very lucky.

Now that's a sweeping statement. If what you said were true, how come the title of "The Lucky Country" belongs to someone else?
Y'know honestly.. I once believed that we're the luckiest lot in the world.
I was born into an upper class family.. and I was constantly surrounded by equally happy, well-off people, because my folks watched me like a hawk.. in fact they once threw a fit and warned me to stay away from my best friend "or else" just because she lives in an HDB.
But after my family took a bad fall, no more high life for me.. I started to mix with regular heartlanders, live a normal life.. that's when I came to realize things are not as they seem in Singapore... there's so many things hidden from us, things you almost have NO way of seeing when you're above the clouds.
This may sound cliche, but how else can I put it ..? You just have to see it, live it, for yourself.

Are we better of then a lot of other nations? Certainly.
Should we always count out blessings? Certainly.
Should we be happy for the things that we have? Of course.
But does all this mean that we turn a blind eye to the injustice and wrongs that still exist in our nation and convince ourselves that there's really no need to speak up or do something about it?
Certainly not!
It's like saying there's no need to work to reduce crime as long as it is under a quota. Let's say there are 500 robberies in JB every week, as long as there are 499 robberies in Singapore we can be considered lucklier... which is pretty much nonsense. Also by that "lucky" logic we can conclude that when I see Cystaire being robbed and realize it's just the 458th robbery I can pretty much ignore it as we are still considered "lucky." -

No, I was never above the clouds. I have always been a heartlander, so the things that have been hidden from you have been obvious to me all along.
I still think we are very lucky, heartlander or not. It's easier for things to be worse than better. -

Yes yes..singapore may have a good government system, but this damn country is just too boring man! i rather go to taiwan or thailand, though things may not be safe, bombing, people getting hacked suddenly, but all this excitement actually make life fuller[/b]

If your point is Singaporeans have it a lot better then most other nations, then it stops there and then that's fine. I was comparing Singapore to JB and Batam, simply because Singapore is located in this region, near JB and Batam. It is an illustration that national sovereignty is a powerful and potent boundary.
Imagine, you take a ferry only, or cross the bridge only, and things change so much.
Why? Simply because the management is different. That is all.
It is perhaps the same like when you see those photos of Korea border.
On one side you will see an athletic South Korean soldier with a nice uniform. On the other side you see a smaller size North Korean soldier with an uniform too big.
I still remember a photo where the South Korean side has smooth paved road and North Korean side has crackly road.
Why?? Actually they are one nation. They are one nation but with two different governments. Different management.
So, when I compare Singapore to JB and Batam, it is to illustrate the strength of Singapore management.
Although you think Singapore demographics is different from JB or Batam, but actually, not so much different. It's not so much a question of demographics, but management.
If we compare Singapore to HK or Taiwan, sure, they are also good. But remember, HK is twice of Singapore.
Taiwan is many times of Singapore.
As an illustration, can you imagine if Singapore is divided into half, and then one of it become a country and compete with the 'whole' Singapore? What do you think it will be like?
So I would say, Singapore, which is one half of HK only, and one-dunno-how-manyth of Taiwan only, is standing up real well to comparison.

Look, why are we comparing ourselves with people in the surrounding area?
In the more affluent parts of America, minus some of the lesser cities that have ridiculously high crime rate, which is why most people live in the small towns, the graduates there get decent jobs, and can afford to live on rented apts for years, and they even own second hand cars without breaking the bank.
Then I would go on and point out that even a person could sustain themselves on a job at MacDonalds, minus some of the more comfortable things in life of course.
So why are we even bothering caring about the neighbourhood, when we can't even match up against that?
Sure we have a govt that supposedly fawns over us, the fact remains is that the US and UK are way ahead of us when it comes to innovation and what not. Singaporeans aren't lucky, they are just ignorant. -

ok guys. Elites is always the thing to talk about when such topic is hanging.
I know many of netizens around here dont really like PAP. Me too share the same thought. But i've come to a conculsion.
1) At least now in SGP, PAP can bring SG forward and successful if not no point complaining abt them. Admit it, they did a gd job in overcoming SARS and generating jobs for people. IR is a big project that is going to boost SG econs.
2)Compare Oppositon to PAP, the opposition is still not as capable as PAP. You might vote them the winner and the next, SG will crash. Opposition just have to try harder to prove to us that they will do a job at least as good as PAP.
3)I say we're lucky in a way or another but not in a whole. Lucky we dont exp floods as terrible as msia. We dont have hurricane like in US. Look at taiwan govt n ours, which do u prefer. Taiwan is so unorganised in the parliament house whenever they got conflict. Among ASEAN countries, we're the youngest and can say we r the most successful among all.
4) Why do you think MNCs want to invest in SG? Save,Stable and Secure. That shows how much PAP have contribute. Going overseas and have regular meetings with other country's ministers to have close links.
somehow, we're lucky in one way or another but not the luckiest. -
I do agree that we (as well as our gov) are indeed VERY lucky in that we don't have to face any natural disasters such earthquakes, tsunamis, or tornados/typhoons.
If we do... I think it would make it hard for our gov to hoard money as they are doing now...

All are not welcome.
But we have to see the overall result of each policy and
the overall results of ALL POLICIES.
There are not perfect policy,just the best policy which is even

We were advised by foreign big consultans to upgrade Paya Lebar
International Airport instead of building new one in Changi.
