For those who argue that Singapore has good management, i would agree to some extent. Singapore is indeed good in logistic, law and order and things that are tried and tested. But i think a "wise ruler", "enlightened philospher- King" is only a myth - we are but humans and are only good in certain areas.
Which Leader in Singapore can lead NTUC into a carrefour? If we had many leaders with good business acumen coupled with Temasek funding, we should be able to dominate world markets like Nokia in Finland. Its because of the lack of good ideas/creativity and good businesses that the capital are not used to fund local companies but overseas ones.
Singapore is poor on producing research that contributes to economy. This is something we sure could learn from our neighbors that have fighting in parliament. If we continue to suffer from the all encompassing wise ruler syndrome, our neighbors would surely overtake us in years to come. -
if these people are really foreign talents, why didnt their own mother nation retain them? Why must they seeking outside their country? They are not consider a talent in their country that's y they seek out..

I couldn't agree more. If the Singapore govt acknowledges mistakes of the past, learns from them and moves on.. then our country stands a chance to truly become world class. However, if our leaders instead decide to continue channeling their efforts towards silencing and stunting the growth of its people in order to maintain the "status quo" (read: retain power), we are heading towards disaster.
Should we go down the latter, short-sighted path, I deeply suspect that it is not an invading force which will cause the collapse of our nation.. but our own selves. -

Life in Singapore is definitely comfortable but not necessarily a happy one. I would say things come too easy for most Singaporeans.
I also agree with Justice Bao on his comparison with Johor and Batam. A country is shaped by events and decisions that are largely decided by the government. Demographics here wouldn't have affected so much as to how very close neighboring countries differed so greatly.
Back to Singaporeans are lucky is true but we are not necessarily the happiest. It is same to say that a rich person is not necessarily happier than a poor person.
Because Singaporeans are rich, we also have the problems typical of rich ppl. E.g. A lot of money and assets to manage, have to obtain a high level of knowledge and skills, not as easy to be satisfied, etc...
Rich Singaporeans have a busy and stressed lifestyle which is very similar to Hong Kong. However, for me, I rather live simpler lifestyle that is not so stressed and yet I can survive pretty ok with.
And don't u guys have similar notions? -
You forget that we do not have much freedom of choice when it comes to country matters. From day one, our lives have been planned out for us by others. If we compare Singapore to HK or Taiwan, sure, they are also good. But remember, HK is twice of Singapore.
Taiwan is many times of Singapore.
As an illustration, can you imagine if Singapore is divided into half, and then one of it become a country and compete with the 'whole' Singapore? What do you think it will be like?
So I would say, Singapore, which is one half of HK only, and one-dunno-how-manyth of Taiwan only, is standing up real well to comparison.

Generally, we are lucky.
When we talk about lucky here, i think it just boils down to the fact in the position of where we are standing. If we so happen to be high up there, powerful, rich and everything at the back of your call, i think that would be indeed considered lucky and that your view of the world is peaceful and prosperous.
However when you are unemployed, faced with the increase in GST, and a lot of mouths to feed at home. You would definitely feel you are the world unluckiest person. Unable to even provide the basic needs and eduction for the young, not being able to put food on the table, will the rich ever have this experience? Will the poor feel lucky in the state that they are in? And lets not forget that there will always be more poor ppl than the rich ones.
So how lucky can they go. -
I would rather give up a little freedom for a bunch of safety and good life... seriously... but at the same time the option to change my government... which is what is happening now. We have the option to choose who we want to govern us. And we did. The majority of us choose PAP and a few other opposition voices in the paliment. So for those of the minorities here... I'm so sorry for you, you just have to follow the crowd.

Singapore may not be the best of place... but I guess its one of the better ones here in this planet. Its will never be perfect sorry... well if those people who really think things should change... why not get into the politics then here complaining this and that... nothing wrong but I guess alot of complains are rather not logical or just... I'm neutral towards the ruling and opposition parties... but I think I am logical to choose who govern my country...

The environment changes... and quite frankly, good or bad government, PAP or opposition, doesn't change the fact that Singapore is my home... It's not perfect... my family's not perfect too... but I love it anyway...
