where you heard this from? Rubbish..Originally posted by carlsonxjd:all singaporean have 2nd surname. lee.
Well said...these are exactly what I'm thinking. Only good in squeezing local breed singaporeans.Originally posted by kilua:For those who argue that Singapore has good management, i would agree to some extent. Singapore is indeed good in logistic, law and order and things that are tried and tested. But i think a "wise ruler", "enlightened philospher- King" is only a myth - we are but humans and are only good in certain areas.
Which Leader in Singapore can lead NTUC into a carrefour? If we had many leaders with good business acumen coupled with Temasek funding, we should be able to dominate world markets like Nokia in Finland. Its because of the lack of good ideas/creativity and good businesses that the capital are not used to fund local companies but overseas ones.
Singapore is poor on producing research that contributes to economy. This is something we sure could learn from our neighbors that have fighting in parliament. If we continue to suffer from the all encompassing wise ruler syndrome, our neighbors would surely overtake us in years to come.
I couldn't agree more. Singapore must 1st learn to open up to criticism from within.. the "one wise ruler" is backdated in today's world and only serves to hold us back.Originally posted by kilua:But i think a "wise ruler", "enlightened philospher- King" is only a myth - we are but humans and are only good in certain areas.

Nope, you didn't quite catch my main point. Nor did the other posters in the past three pages.Originally posted by SingaporeTyrannosaur:If your point is Singaporeans have it a lot better then most other nations, then it stops there and then that's fine. But beyond that there are still plenty of things Singaporeans ought to be doing about their country and your posts here seem to be suggesting a passive grass-is-green-enough attitude to all this.

Oh I forgot the elitez in SG are escaping the country... So what next? uses our sch drop out to fill the elitez jobs?
You forget that we do not have much freedom of choice when it comes to country matters. From day one, our lives have been planned out for us by others. Those in the creative line tend to feel Singapore is much too stifling for them.Originally posted by apples:Life in Singapore is definitely comfortable but not necessarily a happy one. I would say things come too easy for most Singaporeans.
I also agree with Justice Bao on his comparison with Johor and Batam. A country is shaped by events and decisions that are largely decided by the government. Demographics here wouldn't have affected so much as to how very close neighboring countries differed so greatly.
Back to Singaporeans are lucky is true but we are not necessarily the happiest. It is same to say that a rich person is not necessarily happier than a poor person.
Because Singaporeans are rich, we also have the problems typical of rich ppl. E.g. A lot of money and assets to manage, have to obtain a high level of knowledge and skills, not as easy to be satisfied, etc...
Rich Singaporeans have a busy and stressed lifestyle which is very similar to Hong Kong. However, for me, I rather live simpler lifestyle that is not so stressed and yet I can survive pretty ok with.
And don't u guys have similar notions?
why singaporeans whine and continue to whine for it's worth, not neccesarily for better or for worst... an outlet, a resignation, perhaps...Originally posted by Cystaire:...That second part is my point.

We are battery hens in a farm, friend. We are lucky to be fed and not worry about predators, unlucky to be caged and milked for all our worth.
It's not a matter of only management, if you seriously think that it's management, I guess if you send Mr. Lee the elder over to Indonesia or Phillipines, you will achieve the same results as Singapore.Originally posted by Meat Pao:Hi,
I was comparing Singapore to JB and Batam, simply because Singapore is located in this region, near JB and Batam. It is an illustration that national sovereignty is a powerful and potent boundary.
Imagine, you take a ferry only, or cross the bridge only, and things change so much.
Why? Simply because the management is different. That is all.
It is perhaps the same like when you see those photos of Korea border.
On one side you will see an athletic South Korean soldier with a nice uniform. On the other side you see a smaller size North Korean soldier with an uniform too big.
I still remember a photo where the South Korean side has smooth paved road and North Korean side has crackly road.
Why?? Actually they are one nation. They are one nation but with two different governments. Different management.
So, when I compare Singapore to JB and Batam, it is to illustrate the strength of Singapore management.
Although you think Singapore demographics is different from JB or Batam, but actually, not so much different. It's not so much a question of demographics, but management.
If we compare Singapore to HK or Taiwan, sure, they are also good. But remember, HK is twice of Singapore.
Taiwan is many times of Singapore.
As an illustration, can you imagine if Singapore is divided into half, and then one of it become a country and compete with the 'whole' Singapore? What do you think it will be like?
So I would say, Singapore, which is one half of HK only, and one-dunno-how-manyth of Taiwan only, is standing up real well to comparison.
Meat Pao.
That said, I was wondering again that it is so similar with typical rich parents asking their children to inherit their business so that the empire can be maintained!Originally posted by spinsugar:You forget that we do not have much freedom of choice when it comes to country matters. If not for our strategic geographical location, we would not have been able to achieve the status of being one of the worlds busiest port. Sir Stamford Raffles already saw the strategic geographical importance of Singapore in the early 1800s.
You are extremely optimistic on the naive side.

please refer to this threadOriginally posted by banzie:I would rather give up a little freedom for a bunch of safety and good life... seriously... but at the same time the option to change my government... which is what is happening now. We have the option to choose who we want to govern us. And we did. The majority of us choose PAP and a few other opposition voices in the paliment. So for those of the minorities here... I'm so sorry for you, you just have to follow the crowd.

Argh..the reason our history is good is because we only have a little over 40 years as an independent country! Yes yes..singapore may have a good government system, but this damn country is just too boring man! i rather go to taiwan or thailand, though things may not be safe, bombing, people getting hacked suddenly, but all this excitement actually make life fuller
