Like Hong Kong, the govt here should leave the non-strategic business to the private sector.

As of 2005, there were 18,138 taxis in Hong Kong,
Singapore has a total fleet of 22,305 taxis operated by seven taxi companies and independent drivers in March 2006. Yet we have numerous compaints by tourists for no cabs. -
Out of 22,305 taxis in sinkapore...I'm afraid maybe only half were taken up by taxi drivers. Simple....They have to work a least 12 hours a day to make a pathetic S$2000-S$2500 a month. Singapore metro firm SMRT Q3 profit rises 35 pct
SINGAPORE, Jan 26 (Reuters) - SMRT Corp. Ltd. , the state-controlled operator of Singapore's immaculate metro, on Friday posted a 35 percent rise in quarterly earnings.
SMRT, which also runs buses and taxis in the wealthy city-state, said in a statement it earned S$40.4 million ($26.3 million) in net profit in its fiscal third quarter, compared with S$30 million a year earlier.
Net profit for the first nine months of its financial year to the end of March rose 19 percent to S$99.3 million.
The transport company is expected to report net profit of around S$112.5 million for the year to March 2007, according to the average of nine analysts polled by Reuters Estimates. -
Govt always wanted the local bank to rid themselves of non banking business so that when these non banking businesses go bust the banking operations will not be affected thus protecting the financial well being of the country.
What about govt involved in businesses? Businesses such as properties, banking, ports, utilities, transport, telco, you name it they have it.
We have seen how they wanted to 'get rid' of the privately run banking business by OUB leaving the govt the biggest player left in the banking industry.
Certainly the impact govt business failure is much much greater than what a bank can do to a country. -
