SINGAPORE: Cod fish sold in Singapore is safe to eat.
The Agri-Food and Veterinary Authority says the type of fish which caused many to be sick in Hong Kong is not known to be available here.
Mr Wong Tak Po, who called the MediaCorp News Hotline, was initially concerned when he bought five pieces of cod fish at a discount from a local supermarket.
Even though his family have since eaten two pieces, they have not experienced any health problems.
AVA says the so-called "oil fish" that caused a food scare in Hong Kong dwells near the bottom of the seabed, and has a waxy, non-digestible substance, which can cause diarrhoea if taken in large amounts. - CNA /dt

SINGAPORE: The Agri-Food & Veterinary Authority in Singapore has instructed traders to comply with labelling requirements.
This follows reports that oil fish is being touted and sold as cod fish.
It says many consumers may not be aware of the laxative side effects of eating oil fish due to the high content of indigestible waxy oil.
If not prepared properly or eaten in large quantities, it could cause diarrhoea in some consumers.
AVA says traders should correctly label the fish so that consumers can identify it.
Under its Sale of Food Act, it is an offence to sell food products which do not comply with labelling requirements.
If convicted, a person can be fined up to $5,000.
For subsequent convictions, he can be fined a maximum of $10,000 or jailed up to 3 months or both.
MediaCorp has been receiving calls from the public voicing concern about whether oil fish is safe to eat.
AVA says grilling will help to reduce the heavy fat content, and not everyone who eats the fish will be affected.

First they tell you this kind of fish is not available here, the fish sold here is safe, then they tell fish retailers to label their fish properly.
All those time when there is a certain food scare in neighbouring countries, I wonder how many of those actually did affect us, but was covered up by the authorities.
I wonder how many more cover ups are there, those that have not surfaced. -

The flesh is very smooth and tender.....I thought I was in heaven until digestion time. That was a nightmare , I farted oil for 3 days - a cough will trigger an oil output..... almost legendary like Xenical . -

the fish scare, well i must say it's the labelling - a underhand tatic used by traders to supply fake products when they don't have enough and yet don't want to compenstate the contract (if there's any)
the wax layer that was mentioned in the news was a tatic that some traders used to make the colour nearer to the fish that they lack in.
that rings another bell, since traders are allowed to use wax, but this time, it's just an overdosage, than doesn't it means that we have being consuming waxed fishes all this while if we didn't order Live fish from restaurants or from the wet market?
wax is a way that traders use to preserve and prevent the fish from rotting.
i wonder if it's safe to consume waxed fish -

If you notice our AVA always say our chicken, duck, fish, veggie all safe...or say we never import from the infected sources.

First, they report Singapore didn't sell the fishes in question; Then they say these fishes were imported into Singapore but 80% are for exporting. The question is, where are the rest of the 20%? Could it be in our stomach already? -

Maybe they didn't want to cause widespread panic, that's why they said that Singapore does not import the fish in question.
Later people discovered that we did in fact import those fish, they have to report to the media.
In Singapore, there's this golden rule, there is no occurence of any event or crime till it is discovered by the public. -

I wonder how much of those fish (those that were reported in the past, where they use formaldehyde to preserve the fish) we consumed.
Anyway, the effects won't surface till much much later in life. Maybe in 10-20 years time, you find cancerous lumps growing in your body, you can probably attribute this to the cover ups or false sense of security created by them. They did say that we did not import those contaminated fish then, like what they say now. -

a fish fillet cut and skinned looks like any other piece of fish fillet, no ? ...
it's like the time when the foot and mouth disease struck among pigs in malaysia, some farkers there shipped their pigs to indonesia, then exported it to us, can you tell a piece of malaysian pork chop from a piece of indonesian pork chop ? ...

No sane business would knowingly export the fish, to another country then to Singapore; unless the fish is known to be contaminated in the first place. Like you mention, the issue of infected pork (hand, food and mouth disease).
I believe in such cases of disease outbreak, they should conduct more stringent checks.
I think pig reared in Malaysia and Indonesia might be slightly different in quality, they might be from different species, the quality of the meat might be different due to their diet; maybe a mass spectrometric assay would reveal the composition of the meat. -

what about the pork smuggling cases then ? ... remember how some farkers were hiding pork among frozen beef and even non-food items and driving them across the causeway ? ....
so what should be the sample size then ? ... every single pig ? ... every single fish ? ...

Last December (2005), BPOM performed a laboratorium test of 161 samples of sea products (including fish, squid, shrimp, oyster, dried salted fish / squid), tofu, and wet noodles from 6 cities at Lampung, South Sumatra. The test showed 64 samples were found positive containing formalin.
The policy was a follow-up measure after indications that numerous fish products contain formalin. In a number of places in Central Java, such as Kendal and Batang regencies, there have been reports of deaths from consuming fish containing formalin, a chemical substance commonly used to preserve corpses.
