Our population is actually increasing slowly, our main issue is that of an greying population.Originally posted by the Bear:yeah.. was thinking.. since our birth rate is one of the lowest in the world, what's going on?
You know, for a person who worships statistics, you really ought to note how fast our population really grew over the last few years and this actually will get achieved faster than you think.Originally posted by lionnoisy:after GCT took over and he published a book called
The Next Leap.It outlines in year X,SG will have 4 million people .
2.History repeats .Many called crazy. How can the population grows
to that figure.
u hate it or not,Strait Times also forecast SG
will reach 6.5m in 20 years.Longer than my forecast of 15 years.
3.Face the reality. The more is merrier.
Yeah the more is merrier for you MIW cronies for you probably get more bonuses and a pay raise to boot...Originally posted by lionnoisy:after GCT took over and he published a book called

Pls note that all statistics figure can be fabricated to suit one interest/need in Sinkapore.Originally posted by Fingolfin_Noldor:You know, for a person who worships statistics, you really ought to note how fast our population really grew over the last few years and this actually will get achieved faster than you think.
The really big driver has PRs and foreigners coming in from the outside. I recall that the population was like in 2.5 million or something mid 90s. Then I was shocked when the statistic was 3.5 million a few years later. I won't be surprised if that figure stood at 4.5-5 now.
Whereas that is true to an extent, it is undeniable that there are in general more foreigners in Singapore over the last few years.Originally posted by foomwee88:Pls note that all statistics figure can be fabricated to suit one interest/need in Sinkapore.
that why the shares market would seldom respond with the export/inport figures revealed by SG!!!

Can SG really support 6.5 mil people? Well, it's like going out on the streets and seeing 1 more person for every two you see... all things considered we still got the space, but things are certainly going to get more packed.
But do u know who n where they r from??? when the population has increased to the size?No idea right!!!Originally posted by Fingolfin_Noldor:Whereas that is true to an extent, it is undeniable that there are in general more foreigners in Singapore over the last few years.
Judging by the way of the ruling party is doing...they are just interested in collecting more amd more taxes and services revenue!!!Originally posted by bigmouthjoe:Yeah the more is merrier for you MIW cronies for you probably get more bonuses and a pay raise to boot...
If we are depending on FTs to increase our population base, I would say I rather we stay at 4.5million and work on getting our current population base to grow.
It's funny to see how the MIW "solves'' problems now.
1) To prevent aging population, instead of trying to solve the problem of high cost of raising kids and the current mentality of only 1 is enough, they bring in FTs who will one day feel the same as Singaporeans.
2) Instead of urging people to take to the public transports and thus cutting down on the number of cars on the road, they are allowing the upward spiral of public transportation cost, while cars are getting cheaper and cheaper. So they try to ''solve'' it again by having ERP gantries all over the CBD.
Noticed that they are not solving the problem of traffic congestion, but in either way, they are increasing their coffers... sometimes you can't help but think that their main aim is to be the number one business conglomerate in the world...
What does this have to do with whatever the powers say?Originally posted by the Bear:yeah.. slowly... but the math doesn't add up to what the powers say...
as for the "greying population", people forget that the current youth is tomorrow's greying population.. then what? 10 million people?
there is a limit to how many Planet Earth can handle.. to what Singapore can handle... already, global warming is one of the alarm bells the politicians are ignoring..
anyway, go ask Joe Average and Jane Ordinary what the MRT trains are like during peak hours and if it can handle a 45% increase, they'll probably piss themselves laughingYou will probably get the same reception if you asked people in 1992 that if our MRT lines could really handle the population of 2007 in rush hour. They will probably find it hard to comprehend.

If that is so, why is the land reclamation going on and on? Simple, we don't have enough land. The profit minded MRT is hardly able to cope with the rush hour traffic now, not to mention 45% increase. What we see now is more and more lands being used to built playgrounds for the rich FTs. More PAPs=bad. A dual economy will become a reality - a class of working poor locals vs a class of rich expoitative pro PAP FTs.Originally posted by SingaporeTyrannosaur:You will probably get the same reception if you asked people in 1992 that if our MRT lines could really handle the population of 2007 in rush hour. Can we take 45% increase? Probably. The ability of a nation to take it's population depends on its infrastructure as well. In terms of sheer land area we still have more then enough land to house an additional 45%. Of course new things will have to be built and current things upgraded.
At the end of the day, all said and done is this: Can we really, or pratically cap our population at where it is now? If not, shouldn't we be discussing more pratical things instead of always playing the tune of "more people=bad"?
